To support a @durhamuniversity.bsky.social and Uppsala research project on marginalia and machine-learning we acquired some annotated early printed books. There is a LOT going on with this history poem. (DUL SB 2552) #newacq #speccolls #marginalia #rarebooks

Happy Valentine’s Day from the Oriental Museum! 💗💗🦆🦆💗💗 In Chinese culture, Mandarin ducks (鸳鸯, yuānyāng) have long symbolised love, devotion, and lifelong partnership.

We love this old photograph of the Billy B (called the Main Library back then) 😍 Can you guess which decade it's from? 👀 Look at those cars lined up outside the Geography department! Thank you to @ducollections.bsky.social for the image (ref: UND/CK1/BB/D3) #ThrowbackThursday #DULib

When it’s cold & wet outside, a cup of tea is the perfect thing to warm you up. This ginormous tea pot means that it could hold enough tea for the whole museum team! The Korean tea pot is one of my favourite objects in the collection as it shows the incredible skill of the potters.

Check out the new blogpost by our Research Engagement and Collections Development Archivist! 👀 From ☕ and 🍰 to 📖! A successful collaboration on lay Catholic Societies! dulib.blog/2025/02/07/f... @durhamuniversity.bsky.social @dulib.bsky.social @drodurham.bsky.social

Very few parts of the city outside medieval core were not in some way touched by bulldozers for the new road schemes.  This picture (c.1962) shows the newly constructed 3rd Baths bridge in the foreground with the now lost Pelaw Leazes (right) and Woodbine Cottage (centre). #durham #DUCollections

Our Curator & Interns have been re-pinning insect specimens into new entomology drawers. A highlight? Working with moths collected by 1960s Durham students! Often overlooked in favour of butterflies 🦋 moths are 10x more diverse with 2500 species in the UK! They play a crucial role in ecosystems!

Happy Friday! It’s the end of our third week over here on #Bluesky and we’ve reached over 1k followers already! Hello to you all and thanks so much for following 👋😊 #Durham #DUCollections

Thomas Sharp’s road scheme necessitated the destruction of the lower end of Claypath. The photograph (1960’s) shows the historic buildings lost on the north side of the road, which included an Ironmongers, a pub (the Wheatsheaf Inn) and the Co-operative Stores. #Durham #Archives

Children's theatre picture book brought out earlier this week @ducollections.bsky.social for students to reflect on emotional responses to physical v digital formats #rarebooks

We do love a #ThrowbackThursday 💜⏪ Check out this photograph of the old Science Library under construction circa 1965! Nowadays, the building makes up part of the Billy B on Lower Mountjoy 🏢 📷 UND/EA1/JB3 @ducollections.bsky.social #Durham #Library

In 1944, a local town planner Thomas Sharp created a plan for urban renewal in Durham. His scheme was finally brought to fruition between 1966 and 1974. The photograph shows the construction of the new Millburngate Bridge in 1966. #Durham #DUCollections

By the early 20th century much of the city’s historic 17th and 18th century buildings were little more than slums. The 1920s saw mass slum clearances, especially in Millburngate. This photograph shows preparations in the 1960s for a new Road Scheme.  #DUCollections #Durham
