A Houstonian had some choice words to share this week with the Texas Department of Transportation over their I-10 construction’s role in shutting down two popular trail bridges — and they did it with spray paint.

Getting away close to some of the state’s biggest cities & most popular spots is becoming increasingly difficult. Parks w/ high use also have high maintenance needs, and even as the state pours more than $1B into making more of TX into parkland, there is uncertainty there is enough cash for upkeep.

Not one, but two popular trail bridges spanning White Oak Bayou were struck by loose construction materials from ongoing work along Interstate 10, closing both spans as well as a key stretch of trail, isolating portions of the running and cycling path.

“My commitment to ending the loss of lives starts right now,” Mayor John Whitmire said. “Not years from now.” Less than a year later, 2024 ended as the deadliest year for drivers, passengers & pedestrians in the city. At least 344 people were killed on Houston area streets last year, a record high.
