So, the alternative to rearmament for Europe is becoming the plaything of the ‘great’(what a catastrophic idea of greatness) power preening of Russia and USA. Rearm and cooperate or lose the rule of law.

All European leaders making statements of support for Ukraine really should put their money and arms where their mouths are this weekend. It is important to remember that Europe's efforts to date have been insufficient.

With the Soprano’s-style dressing down of Zelensky, the first episode of illiberal America ended: after a month of random events, dear boy, events (Remember threats to Greenland and Canada?(hint: they’ll reappear later in the series)). But the story is clear: do what I say or you end up in a dumpster.

Looking forward to the @washingtonpost.com’s hot take on the Trump-Zelenskyy debacle. It’s all about personal liberties and free markets, remember?

The question facing Keir Starmer all of a sudden is ‘Chamberlain or Churchill?’

Well, the unmasking of Trump2 hasn’t taken long. Kamala didn’t put it strongly enough clearly.

Labour MPs need to find their consciences this weekend and face the country with facts. Hand of history time.

First they came for the Ukrainians. A day that will live in infamy.

Basically watching Trump makes you suspect you you must’ve accidentally taken a dangerous halucigenic substance. And then you realise he means it.. and he’s got license to do what he wants with nuclear bombs.

Huge thanks to everyone who joined us at our Financing the Future roundtable today – a fantastic discussion with lots of valuable insights. We’re excited to continue the conversation in Cardiff, Belfast & Newcastle over the next few months. Keep an eye out for our discussion paper coming soon!

Facts are sometimes useful.,,,

I find it depressing that the best a Labour government can come up with is to swap aid for defence, rather than face the question of tax. Increasing global inequality is a serious strategic risk imo.

The 80-year presumption that western European countries can rely on US democratic solidarity for security is broken. No country in Europe can go it alone. National Security has transformed discussions on the UK's relationship with the EU in a week.

An era of political fragmentation, online radicalisation and economic nostalgia, all leading to deep uncertainty. In which few politicians have good clear answers, and the ones with bad clear answers are often the most effective.

So stark: There is no cultural firewall against the far right in the former East Germany . AfD(blue) come first in virtually every constituency. Reunification has left two distinct cultures, even 37 years later.

Young voters swung away from the ‘Traffic Light coalition: but the biggest winners were the Left, not the far right.

CDU clear winners of German elections. AfD second, slightly below forecasts. The Left poll well.FDP below 5%

The tone of UK public commentary has altered in a week: delusions that Trump is not a lawless mafia gangster are gone, the necessity of a massive rise in defence expenditure is common cause and broad consensus that Ukraine is a crisis at least on par with the crash and Covid. Slowly, then quickly.

Europeans need to stop freaking out over every Trump brainfart about foreign policy and start freaking out about how he is enabling the domestic torching of the American state

Political windstill in Northern Ireland. In a poll with a 3% margin of error, this is effectively ‘no change’. Unionism’s 3-way split is embedded, Small signs of green shoots for the SDLP? 40-40-20 split goes on, and no sign of a majority for a referendum. Now just for some government.

If someone wanted to destroy the United States from within, would they do anything differently than what Trump is doing right now?

When even the New York Post has to publish this, you know you fucked up.

Build it and they will come? 50% rise in Dublin-Belfast passenger numbers since hourly trains were introduced in October. Time to expand the network, and increase the speed of the Enterprise. www.irishnews.com/news/norther...

When Trump says that ‘Russia has the cards’ in Ukraine talks he fails to say that he is the card.

Can the largest economy in the world ‘go rogue’. Or when it elects a rogue as President does it change the definition of normal?

The word ‘lie’ is too limited for Trump. Lying and truth are not categories in his world: there is what needs to be said to serve his ends in the fight - he is consistent. But it has a discombobulating effect if you still care about the difference. We have to assume it, call it and keep calm.

clearly Zelensky won’t do what Trump wants: capitulate or hand over the mineral resources of his country. So he must be blamed for failure , and Trump will have his revenge.

The window for suspending judgement and hoping against hope that Donald Trump ‘doesn’t mean it’ has closed. He does. Calculate accordingly.

This man has the soul of a shrivelled prune. Relentless and performative cruelty.

Truly one of the great lies among the many.

No political party in Europe is currently being honest about the scale of the reliance on migration to meet the needs of an aging population. But demography is destiny. @theguardian.com

The logical end of a policy that promotes macho cruelty and humiliation. But so soon?

As Vance 'lectures' Europe on free speech, it is good to be reminded that the United States ranks 55 (!) on the World Press Freedom Index. The top 10 countries are ALL in Europe. #journalism #democracy #freepress rsf.org/en/index

Starmer’s Labour seem to be under the delusion that a sustainable partnership is possible with this US regime. Instead he should be encouraging the monarch to go to Canada, where he is head of state, and watching the reports.

It’s wild that the American VP is criticizing European countries for stifling freedom of speech. In the Press Freedom Index, the US ranks 55th, while Sweden is 3rd and Germany 10th. Russia, meanwhile, sits at 162.

NATO is over: because the US has abandoned its commitments. Europe will have to build an army. It may not be desirable but it has become reality.

Thread. The damage these fuckwits are doing around the world is incalculable.

The parallels of Trump’s approach to Ukraine with Chamberlain’s approach to the Czechoslovakia in 1938 end when you realise that where Chamberlain was naive, Trump is intentional.

Pay close attention to the specific lie here. Musk has found literally zero “fraud,” but he’s repeatedly hit outlets and agencies that threaten his business. Reuters has won multiple awards for covering eg the many deaths caused by his self-driving technology

“The true ‘ordo amoris’ that must be promoted is that which we discover by meditating constantly on the parable of the ‘Good Samaritan’, that is, by meditating on the love that builds a fraternity open to all, without exception” The Pope reworks Vance.

Performative and intentional, small scale but still harmful and completely unnecessary. But he can. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...
