A very long read, but bear with it, home truths that need repeating ... irishcycle.com/2025/02/25/no-dun-laoghaire-is-not-using-an-east-german-approach-it-had-fair-and-free-local-elections-just-last-year-and-its-madness-this-needs-to-be-said/

RTE primetime tonight highlighted the crazy lack of enforcement that we have in Ireland when it comes to jumping red lights. Camera technology could be deployed quickly, 10 years since the tech was piloted in Dublin and we are still waiting for a roll out.

I was wandering the National Gallery of #Ireland the other day #NGI and this painting of the South Quays by Walter Osborne from 1889 reminded me that the streets of Dublin were not designed for cars and should not be dominated by them now. Dublin will be transformed by its new traffic plans.

RTE Primetime did a program on red light runners. Active travel networks need to be fast tracked to give people the realistic option of cycling and walking. Most trips in Ireland are a couple of KM, morning rush hours are mainly kids getting dropped to school. tinyurl.com/52fdaxnp

Ireland has 160,000 vacant homes, explanations about homes being in probate or prohibitively expensive to renovate are unacceptable excuses. Well done to those involved in the "buy me a home" show on Virgin media for highlighting the issue @frankoconnor.bsky.social @judesherry.bsky.social

Latest update on DLR construction. There is a public meeting being held on Thursday by the contractor to communicate about progress and what is being done. The usual suspects on X are screaming about how unfair the roadworks are www.dlrcoco.ie/environment-...

I’m delighted to see this. If you have a small or big bit of land and want to rewild it but don’t know where to start, get in touch!

New business alert for Marine Road #Dunlaoghaire called French Revolution eclairs. I felt the need to go for a run just looking at them

#DunLaoghaire #ireland central project has begun and it is going to finally make it possible for people to get to school and work by active travel (it is not just safe biking but also safe walking) www.youtube.com/watch?v=y36J...

I'm watching a report from Brussels on the EUs reaction to possible tariffs on exports to US. Trump is complaining that we don't buy enough US cars, look at the traffic in the background, the last thing we need is US cars! #eu #carbrain

The city before the automobile. Trams, bicycles, pedestrians, horses. Quieter, more relaxed, and people still got where they needed to go (And got a little bit of exercise, too.) A dreamy view of #Barcelona, from a tram running down Carrer Gran de Gràcia, 1909.

Great to see -- via South Dublin Cycling on the other place:

My wife parked her bike in our new house internal court, and it's straight out of a movie.

I love these urban football pitches in New York. Running track around it too. #NYC #livingstreets

Killiney Hill, Dublin, #Ireland yesterday evening. An amazing #sunset

I refuse to shut up about this: NYC started charging $9 to bring a car into our most transit-rich zone, the haters & trolls predicted doom, but traffic evaporated instantly and here’s Times Square tonite (even after the holiday tourists have left). For a better future, build transit & price driving!

Chilly work this morning in #Dunlaoghaire

The seat of a bike is the perfect place and pace for an intimate, unfiltered experience of the natural and built environments around you; each pedal stroke seemingly slowing the world down to reveal new sights, scents and sounds. It helps you feel a part of the city, instead of apart from the city.

One reason I think it’s important to continue to highlight the disparity on our streets is that most people just don’t see it. Despite it being obvious to some, so many people don't have clarity because we have done such an incredible job of normalizing this imbalance.

Then and now. What is noticeable is that the scene is people rather than car orientated. Also, there is beautiful lighting. Even the utility telegraph poll has a drop down tear drop light. Street lighting is so important to #livingstreets.

This 82k from Geodirectory isn't even complete. Census counted 163k empty homes But this also doesn't include 67k homes used as private hotels 35k homes used as public hotels 21k derelict homes 30k empty commerical buidlings that could be converted to many more homes #DerelictIreland #VacantIreland

There were 82,031 residential properties recorded as vacant in June 2024, many of them allowed to slip into dereliction. It's mind boggling that this has been allowed to happen. A #dereliction of duty by our local authorities in a #housingcrisis in #ireland #derelictireland

Beautiful silver to grey view in #dublin looking towards #wicklow mountains in #ireland. Taken from Killiney Hill

Haarlemmerstraat, Amsterdam in 1981 and today. Still a very busy route into the centre of the city but now only for bikes as through motor traffic has been removed and now uses main roads nearby instead. Design your streets for the type of traffic you want.

Good article with no paywall. I think the message is no amount of populist screaming from independents or populists inside the Irish government can undo the foundations that have been put in place. #climate #ireland m.independent.ie/opinion/comm...

So @judesherry.bsky.social & I were only a few months into #DerelictIreland campaign when Eco Eye came calling to bring the conversation to a national audience Here is a clip from the show that aired early'21 Thanks everyone for amazing support Together we're stronger Happy 2025 The fight goes on 🙏

The #wicklowway is incredibly desolate and barren where it is not engulfed in plantation forestry or bracken. The Irish government could start with removing sheep, sika deer and Sitka plantations from our #nationalparks and just let it recover naturally.

Car-free makes carefree!
