@mark-carney.bsky.social Mr. Carney, regarding your plan to reduce federal "spending" but increase "investments": in which category do you put federal support for research and innovation? Do you see it as an expense or an investment?

🧬 Join our lab in Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦! Exciting postdoc opening joint with @durocher1.bsky.social at the intersection of machine learning and cancer genomics-develop next-gen models to predict genetic interactions with in-the-loop validation. Dear all, Postdoc positions are available to work on (1) the role of DNA strand break repair proteins during DNA replication and (2) the molecular/structural biology of XRCC1 protein complexes, as part of our work on genetic diseases & cancer. Contact me if interested: [email protected]

It’s been a tough few weeks. My 10yo daughter was diagnosed with a very rare, aggressive cancer called interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS). I’m reaching out to identify clinicians/patients who have encountered pediatric IDCS or other (non-LCH) dendritic or histiocytic sarcomas cases.

Delighted to share our latest paper describing a method to read the levels of hundreds of metabolites or drugs in parallel using DNA sequencing. This method, which we call ‘smol-seq’ (Small MOLecule sequencing), harnesses the power of DNA sequencing for metabolite detection: rdcu.be/d8xLv (1/6)

There is clearly enough bullshit in the US to fertilize the fields of Iowa

I wonder if my American friends understand the acute sense of collective betrayal we are experiencing in Canada right now. It's widespread and deeply felt.

Dear all, over Christmas I was sadly informed that Larry Thompson died on Dec.16th. Those of you that knew Larry and his work will know how big a loss this is to the genome stability community. A brief memoriam and tribute to Larry is available in DNA Repair. authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S...

We are recruiting! Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto is recruiting an early career cancer research scientist at Assistant Professor level. Apply! Spread the word! www.nature.com/naturecareer...

My research is finally out! Huge thanks to @thecesarelab.bsky.social, @radoncdocgee.bsky.social, and everyone involved for their invaluable support along the way. Briefly, we have demonstrated that cell cycle dependent DSB repair pathways guide death outcomes following lethal genomic damage.

1/n Some time ago my colleague, excellent cook, and friend Ivan told me: "Cacio e pepe is the recipe that I screw up more often. Let's make a project studying systematically the physics of that sauce". Prepare to get cheesy, I'm glad to share the Cacio e paper preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2501.00536

I sincerely hope that some of you among my football (soccer)-playing bioinformatics/computational biologists colleagues play in a team called Log2FC.

RIP David Lodge. I've only read Small World but it was such a funny book with its vivid and hilarious description of academia. I don't understand why I haven't read any of his other books yet. Something I plan to correct!
