NEW: i spoke with several young AmeriCorps volunteers around the country who were abruptly pulled off projects building homes, readying forests for wildfire season, and working at food banks Tuesday afternoon. they are now on their way home thanks to DOGE cuts —

It works. The government here largely works. Because we are so spoiled by how well it works, we are letting a fool convince us it is broken.

ICYMI, ICER released a new white paper last week on affordable access to GLP-1s ICER will host a public webinar at 12:00pm ET on April 22, 2025 to discuss the potential market strategies and federal policy solutions outlined in the white paper. More: icer.org/news-insight... (1/3)

Another story that must be told: An ICE agent grabbed Merwil Gutiérrez. One of his fellow agents said, “No, he’s not the one.” Merwil Gutiérrez is a 19-year-old asylum applicant who lives in the Bronx. He was the “wrong one.” ICE wasn’t there looking for him. “Take him anyway,” came the reply.

You might ask why I've been so relentlessly negative about the Trump tariffs. It’s not personal—unless you count my deep, personal hatred of bad economics, incoherent policy, and self-inflicted economic wounds which also undermine our foreign policy goals.

You can have legal status here and be disappeared with no recourse? Including graduate students? There is so much stuff happening that is awful, but nothing touches this issue. It is really the ONLY news. Why are we all still doing regular things right now?

Didn’t get a chance to post this earlier, but there was a huge turnout in support of Kilmar Abrego Garcia at the federal courthouse. From my seat in the jury room, I heard the supporters outside chanting throughout the hearing.

So. Drug importation. Those conversations will not go well.

Good job, Stanford admin. More of this. “America’s univs are a source of great national strength, creating knowledge and driving innovation and economic growth,” they also wrote. “This strength has been built on government investment but not government control.“ stanforddaily.com/2025/04/15/l...

If President Trump can wrongly deport a Maryland father to a prison in El Salvador and then defy a 9-0 Supreme Court order to facilitate bringing him home, who’s next? This threatens the rights and freedoms of everyone in the United States.

Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen is demanding a meeting with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele over the detention of Kilmar Abrego Garcia and says he’ll go to El Salvador himself if the Marylander isn’t returned.

Today, Mohsen Mahdawi, a legal resident of Vermont, walked into an immigration office to complete a final step for citizenship. Instead, he was arrested by plain-clothed, armed individuals with faces covered. This is immoral, inhumane, and illegal. He must receive due process and be released.

You should update this headline to ALL OF THE COUNTRY'S LEADING SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH is in jeopardy. Here's an example. 👇

Even if FY26 reverses this, it will cost more than $92B to undo. No amount of money will bring back the expertise or multi-year medical studies destroyed. You don't just flip a switch and science, aid programs, & international goodwill restarts. The things he has broken will remain broken for years.

Add “kids receiving unemployment benefits” to list of DOGE hysteria later walked back/which had reasonable explanations. “Social security payments to Ukraine,” “$50M in condoms for Hamas”… everything looks like a conspiracy when you don’t know how anything works. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/12/u...

NSF just slashed its graduate research fellowships by 51%. This prestigious program has trained & nurtured at least 42 scientists who went on to become Nobel laureates. We're destroying it, at exactly the time we claim to worry about our "sputnik moment" with China bsky.app/profile/davi...

I've already had two federal grants terminated and face a 33% pay cut due to future terminations. It's painful, but not as painful as the conversations I'm having every day with brilliant trainees in graduate school and postdoctoral positions who see little future for themselves in US science.

Best thing on the internet.
