In 2018, Adam Serwer wrote a viral piece, The Cruelty Is the Point. Trump’s base doesn’t merely tolerate his cruelty—they are bound together by it. When he mocks the disabled, cages children, or mocks sexual assault survivors, it’s not despite those things that they support him, but because of them.
