The author in the afterword prefers credible to authentic and laments his reputation from the success of this book as a spy who wrote books. A great condemnation of all ideological systems which place themselves above humanity.

Finished The Spy Who Came In From The Cold by John le Carré. After the slight disappointment of the previous book in the Smiley series this is a gripping masterpiece, full of authentic detail and atmosphere 1/2

However, the author seemed unsympathetic at times towards the composer's mother and Marion Scott - an important musician herself - and almost seems to resent Howells' relative success 2/2

Finished Dweller In Shadows by Kate Kennedy. Fascinating to read about Gumey's works, both poetical and musical, as well as his wartime experiences and his many years in an asylum. It was also good to learn about other composers, such as Herbert Howells and Francis Purcell Warren 1/2

Finished Our Mutual Friend - magnificent. See you next Christmas Mr Dickens

Bandage off, plasters on, allowed to play the piano again!

Recovering from surgery for Dupuytrens contracture. Hope to be back to playing right hand octaves soon! Saddened to hear of the deaths of the beautiful and ridiculously talented Tony Slattery, the gruff and great Elgar Howarth and the urbane Charles Kay

Today’s Leek pub - the Fountain. No hot drinks, no food - just lots of beer. Great old school decor and clientele

Finished this and thoroughly enjoyed the detail of Karajan’s life and times

Finished A Murder Of Quality by John le Carré. A flawed thriller with some good commentary on the social divisions caused by private education, as the author himself describes it in his excellent afterward. Some snobbery does seem to rub off on the author in this early work

@schnuckster.bsky.social welcome back David, it has been a duller place with you!

From the Karajan biography by Richard Osborne

A quick trip to Rhos

Finished Leonora by Arnold Bennett. Steered a course between Mills and Boon, Anna Karenina and Crime and Punishment. Not one of his best but always enjoyable and Potteries setting perfectly described

Semele - it’s Handel’s masterpiece…?

Hollins Hill and Parkhouse from Thirkelow

For any Alan Garner fans: Mow Cop, the Old Man of Mow and Jodrell Bank in the distance

@ianrankin1.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/society/2024... Rebus good for at least another 10 books now?!

Finished Black Loch by Peter May. It got bogged down like the pilot whales mentioned in the book by constantly referring to events in previous books but it recovered eventually, and it’s always great to read about places on Lewis. Now no more guilty pleasure books for me for a while!

Trip to Leicester at the weekend

Great stroll on Gun

Snow pics, in case you haven’t seen enough

Trip to Birmingham to see a Thomas Trotter recital

Just finished Agent Running in the Field - classic le Carré and always good to read a spy novel that pours scorn on Johnson

A cake crumb that looks like a wren

Just watched the Derek Jacobi Richard II and found myself longing for the Ben Wishaw/Hollow Crown version

Moon, mackerel sky

Slow tour of Leek pubs to see if any can beat the Blue Mugge (wonderful staff, great value food). This is Den Engel - interesting range of continental beers
