A long time ago, I did a survey. I asked a thousand gamers which game they played the most. Not liked, not cared about. Which one they played the most. One thousand gamers. We had the gameplay data. Of a thousand players, exactly zero got that question right. None of them could tell us.

the rise of the fascist nerds was anticipated by Ellen Ullman's 1995 essay "Out of Time: Reflections on the Programming Life."

I've learned (and I am still learning) how to run a game studio for the last seven years doing both creative and biz. Here's a list of guidelines that work for us and might be useful for others that were lessons I've incorporated with our experience and guidance from others. 🧵

A personal list of lenses for narrative design & genre writing I keep having conversations with writer friends about using lenses to think about fiction (both writing and reading/playing), and I keep promising I'll write down my list somewhere useful. This is as useful a place as I've got!

Working on more save system stuff for the game and, man, saving and loading is so cool. I can turn the game off and then back on and the game remembers where I was and holds onto all of my stuff.

Reminder because I still see this regularly: if you’re a game dev with a Mac game on Steam, there’s a checkbox in Steamworks to indicate it’s 64-bit. If you don’t do this, Mac users get warnings that make it seem like the game won’t run. (Thanks to @mrsambarlow.bsky.social for sharing the fix.)

If you have a spaceship in your game and it *doesn't* have a cool hologram table on the ship's bridge, then what are you even doing?

Gang, at this point I’m too disillusioned to expect all of you to mask always (even though you should), but for the love of GOD, please at least mask at airports and on planes when you travel to events!!!

Shoutout to pets using blankets with printouts of their faces on them.

A Fucking Idiot Said Some Bullshit Again

I think @richtaur.bsky.social pulled off some editing wizardry, because he made me seem somewhat coherent! Here are some tips to gather wishlists, that he managed to plunder! www.youtube.com/watch?v=DofR...

i live in the #gamedev mines but i yearn for the sun

Post a meme made by you

“Thanks to the breakthrough of… a thing potentially happening.” Then that’s not a breakthrough? That’s just you patting yourself on the back for hypothesizing something AI could do? Don’t dangle games archival in front of people to justify more terrible AI tech.

Starting up a bunch of studios, buying more, and having little to no strategy other than “games are money tho” has put too many developers at risk for things like this. More dollars than fucking sense every single time and who pays the actual price? Developers.

Another reminder for those who still seem to have not understood: Chat programs do not “look up” information and then repeat it. They write plausible language in answer to a prompt based on their data set. References will use real people, journals & words from titles, but will not truly exist.

Spent this evening debugging loading YarnSpinner variables from a save file, and folks,

I have “Marvel” muted on here so I only saw folks vague-posting about some major layoff and turns out the Marvel Rivals studio got laid off? Absolutely insane given how much success and love that game’s seen.

hello cis friends this is what people mean by trans genocide if a type of person does not officially exist, then any harm against them cannot be measured or reported this headline change isn't even being caused by an executive order it's simply the NYT editors deciding we don't deserve to exist

Annapurna Interactive announces 'Gone Home' extraction shooter sequel in which 30 players are parachuted into Rural Oregon and attempt to collect enough Angela Carter short story collections and Kate Bush LPs to realize they're a lesbian before anyone else

Welcome to the Gungeon

Apparently Pepper has some disease that’s eating her enamel/dentin and gives her lesions on her gums. :((( She’s gotta get at least one tooth extracted, maybe more. Hopefully, this will give her some relief.

Well, if they’re cleaning up the eShop and taking care of all of the spam, genAI, and deceptive knockoffs, I guess I can live with this! [Holds finger to earpiece] What’s that? Oh…

One in 72 americans have covid Mask, mask, mask, mask
