Something I’ve been working on in my hobby time this year: “Academia: the board game”. You play until one player is promoted to emeritus, or all players burn out and leave academia. Or you can see who survives 4 terms (sorry, ‘productivity cycles’) and tally victory points on your career plan.

I hadn’t realised that the rules against smoking indoors were so widely ignored in Belgium ☹️ I’ve only seen people smoking indoors in one Brussels café but in a bar we visited in Athens, there were ashtrays on every table right under the no smoking signs.

I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky

Just watched a fascinating documentary about the Aral Sea and why it dried out and now my desire to visit Central Asia is rekindled. Nice to be thinking about something other US politics, even though the climate challenges are extremely concerning.
