Reading more about the Stop Der Kindermoord in 1970s Netherlands. Interestingly, they had a staff traffic engineer who designed safer streets for any town that asked. web.archive.org/web/20190922...

Safe streets are not optional but the danger we face daily is a choice: poor road infrastructure, lack of enforcement, and large vehicle sizes. The Dutch "Stop de Kindermoord" movement remade their cities and roads to serve people, creating safety for families of all ages.

ICYMI: Here are our endorsements for the June 10 Democratic primary. @stevenfulop.bsky.social for his housing and transit agenda. 1/3

We are proud to endorse @stevenfulop.bsky.social for governor. Fulop has been a leader as mayor on building housing, implementing vision zero, and creating vibrant public places. Fulop is the best choice for NJ on housing and transit. betterblocksnj.org/2025/06/09/e...

Better Blocks issues its voters guide for LD-32. Learn who we think voters should vote for on June 10, and why. https://betterblocksnj.org/2025/06/08/endorsements-support-and-opposition-in-ld-32/

Learn why Assemblywoman Barbara McCann Stamato earned the unanimous support of the @betterblocksnj.bsky.social steering committee and our strong endorsement in the June 10 LD-31 Democratic primary.

HCDO-backed LD-32 candidate Jennie Pu responds to the Better Blocks questionnaire on housing, transit, Turnpike, and more! https://betterblocksnj.org/2025/06/06/jennie-pu-completes-the-candidate-questionnaire/

Since we're getting questions on it. Six out of the ten candidates running in LD-31 and LD-32 responded. We have yet to get completed questionnaires from the HCD)-backed candidates: Fonseca or Pu in LD-32 nor from Sampson and Walker in LD-31. betterblocksnj.org/blog/

Katie Brennan becomes the latest candidate to complete our questionnaire on housing, transit, parks, and safe streets. Read her full response here: https://betterblocksnj.org/2025/06/05/katie-brennan-takes-the-better-blocks-candidate-questionnaire/

I can't wait for the primary to be over so Jersey City Twitter can go back to our regularly scheduled program of dunking on Jim McGreevey. For example, we can call this element of McGreevey's housing plan "pray-to-play."

@ravibhalla.bsky.social who is running with @katiebrennan.bsky.social to upset the HCDO machine and bring some independence to LD-32 answers the Better Blocks candidate questionnaire. Read Bhalla's thoughts on housing, transit, parks, and the Turnpike expansion.

Rounding out the Democrats for Change slate in LD-32, read Assemblywoman Ramirez's responses to our candidate questionnaire. https://betterblocksnj.org/2025/06/04/assemblywoman-jessica-ramirez-ld-32-answers-the-candidate-questionnaire/

Better blocks are often times built one block at a time. Jersey City, like Hoboken’s Garage B plans, has several promising sites including 150 Bay and 155 Montgomery for large amounts of new affordable housing, amenities to support the arts, public plazas, and space for public schools.

@yousefjsaleh.bsky.social discusses zoning reform and rent regulation with @betterblocksnj.bsky.social as well as his support for transit-oriented development with affordable housing like the 150 Bay Street proposal. Saleh strongly opposes the Turnpike widening and supports more protections for LSP.

Our next entry is Yousef Saleh running as part of Fulop's Democrats for Change in LD-32. Saleh talks about zoning, rent regulation, and his support for the 150 Bay Street project in downtown Jersey… https://betterblocksnj.org/2025/06/04/yousef-saleh-answers-the-better-blocks-questionnaire/

Better Blocks NJ surveys for the candidates running under @stevenfulop.bsky.social's Democrats for Change slate in LD-31 are live. Common themes: strong support for zoning reform, transit-oriented development, and protection for Liberty State Park. Some openness to a compromise on Turnpike widening.

Early voting for the gubernatorial primary starts today in New Jersey. Go vote, if you have not already mailed one in...

@betterblocksnj.bsky.social published its first candidate response. Assemblywoman McCann Stamato comes out in favor of zoning reforms to build housing, transit-oriented development, and supports protections for Liberty State Park. She also mentions finding a compromising on the Turnpike widening.

Isn't it weird that we don't know the NJT contract terms yet?

On that note, many thanks to @katiebrennan.bsky.social and @ravibhalla.bsky.social who made public comments against the Turnpike widening at the last board meeting as well as Assemblywoman Ramirez who sent a spokesperson.

@talyaschwartz.bsky.social is too kind here. A large portion of the lobbyists' comments were actually focused on buttering up Chairman O'Connor and attacking politicians speaking out on the project as "opportunists." All while the same lobbyists' clients were busy donating to buy HCDO support...

When I look back on Murphy's second term, it's a list of disappointments: -NJTransit decaying -OPRA gutted -The Liberty State Park fight -Property tax giveaways to older, wealthier residents -$11B to donors with the Turnpike expansion -Tammy for Senate -The Pompidou revenge tour What was the point?

This checks out. 🙄 @govmurphy.bsky.social is pushing the useless Turnpike expansion, which Sampson supports. Murphy also signed the act that nearly privatized Liberty State Park. And Jerry Walker took a $250k donation from Fireman to push it on Jersey City. hudsoncountyview.com/murphy-backi...

There are a variety of bills in Trenton related to housing affordability. At @betterblocksnj.bsky.social, we will be writing about all of them soon. One of the best pieces of legislation would allow mid-rise apartment buildings to have one stairwell, lowering costs and increasing living space.

Jersey City could probably stand to adopt something similar to the fair lease / model lease that Penn Law drafted for Philadelphia. There’s no harm in having a lease that is compliant with local ordinances surrounding rents. philadelphiafairlease.org

I'm pissed the city council tabled the contract to build a playground on Barrow Street after listening to Councilmen Boggiano and Rivera support parking over parks. Kids deserve space on the plaza, too. It's a good spot for a mini-park. It's always two steps forward and one step back in this city.
