A great follow for anyone interested in where languages, linguistics, and history meet!

It’s a wrap! Many thanks to the Organisers at the University of Insubria for this year’s ICHoLLT! It’s been a great event, and a true pleasure to attend so many inspiring paper presentations!

Dé Domhnaigh seo chugainn, beidh mé ag cuardach stair shloinne Uí Ghallchóir agus stair mo chlann féin. This coming Sunday on @tg4.bsky.social, I'm off in search of the Gallagher name and my own family history. Beo agus ar líne ag 20:30 an 22 Meitheamh: bígí linn!

A lovely interview with @petermandler.bsky.social, who steps down from Cambridge history teaching this year. I feel privileged to have known Peter first as a colleague at Caius and later as the Chair of the @historicaljnl.bsky.social, where his wisdom, wit, and judgement were a treasure.

Looking forward to our Tudor England & the Antwerp Book Trade conference (8–11 July). Meet us in Antwerp to hear all about the #earlymodern book trade, religion & reform. Come for the scholarly discussions, stay for the atmosphere! ☟Sign up before the 30th☟ #bookhistory #rarebooks 📜💙📚

Fantastic to see the announcement of the 2025 cohort of BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinkers (though depressing to see that that cohort has shrunk from ten to just six). Very much looking forward to hearing about their work on radio!

Henry Peacham, 1622: "the Universitie is not untruly called the Light & Eye of the Land, in regard from hence, as from the Center of the Sunne, the glorious beames of Knowledge disperse themselves over al, without which a Chaos of blindnesse would repossesse us againe". @universities-uk.bsky.social

Surely I'm not the only home cook to feel a chill down the spine on reading about a multiple murder trial where a key plank of the prosecution's argument is, and I quote, "Why deviate so significantly from an unfamiliar recipe for a special lunch?"

'The book was translated in the year of the Spanish Armada – when Elizabeth I was monarch – by Bishop William Morgan as part of an effort to bring scriptures to people in languages they understood.'

Update: child number two has finally dropped off and I am considering a direct debit to Opus Dei

Usually I do my anti-Protestant bit in good fun and without any real malice, but tonight the evangelical church behind our house is having some kind of music festival while I'm trying to get two small kids to sleep, and right this moment i would cheerfully welcome back the Spanish Inquisition.

"There are fears that German could die out altogether as a language choice among British pupils, with the number of children taking the subject at GCSE this year representing around a quarter of those sitting either French and Spanish." www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/06...

Speaking of time travellers...

Causing a scene in the time machine as everyone else is gunning for Baby Hitler but I have a list of sixteenth-century clerks I would like a quiet word with

Fantastic interview with @richardcalis.bsky.social about his new book, The Discovery of Ottoman Greece: Knowledge, Encounter, and Belief in the Mediterranean World of Martin Crusius. I've been inspired by this work since first hearing about it and am excited to learn from & teach with the book!

‘Crusius studied spoken Greek carefully, treating his visitors as crucial primary sources. Yet he regarded modern vernacular Greek as a corrupt version of its classical ancestor.’ Alexander Bevilacqua on the German cleric who invented modern Grecomania: www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

You make one unguarded comment to your toddler about how he can't catch you by reason of your being the gingerbread man, and the next thing you know he's chasing you and your spouse down the road shouting "Run! Run! You're tasty treats!"

A strong gesture that tells the world: if you spend a year and a half imprisoning and slaughtering a civilian population, the UK *will* impose sanctions on two of your government ministers. Brave, meaningful, proportionate, and — surely nobody will doubt this — effective.
