We are having a similar conversation at our Library. Some poorly behaved GenAI crawlers (looking at you Alibaba) are battering our online platforms and taking them offline.

Everyone’s acting as if scientists don’t have any agency over where they publish and whether they choose to play the for-profit publishing game. If I, as a pre-tenure PI, can implement an #EthicalPublishing policy without fearing for my career, you can too.

Portobello beach at low tide today was just what the soul needed.

Admittedly, Data Availability Statements for journal articles is not the most exciting subject, but I may have gone over the top in using this meme for this morning's training session.

The news can be overwhelming at times, so it’s important to step away and be mindful of all the good things surrounding us. Where I live the flowers are beginning to bloom and I saw the first geese returning from their winter holidays.

Here's an interesting short (5 min read) blog post written by my colleague on the recent UK AI consultation -> Post-mortem: Why the UK Government Copyright & AI Consultation Left No One Satisfied edin.ac/3QIwb72

To celebrate Caturday and the 1st day of the month I present to you my feline wondermog.

I'm completely fed up of AI bots knocking our digital resources offline due to aggressive harvesting techniques. If this is happening to your digital repositories here's some useful info: wiki.lyrasis.org/display/cmty...

…and in other news I got a nice all-staff email from my über boss telling me our jobs are threatened and basically that the professional service staff are inefficient.

Rainbows on the run home from work today. Managed to dodge the rain showers. Kinda feels like spring is nearly here #runchat #running

Upping the distance on today’s long slow run. 90 days to go to get in shape for race day. #running #runchat #marathon

Due to illness (Covid’s not gone away folks) I have 2 tickets for Mogwai at the Usher Hall in #Edinburgh tomorrow night (Sunday 23rd). They catch is that they are physical tickets so will need to be collected from #leithlinks Gratis, I just want to see them used. @mogwai.scot

I’ve always wondered about this house in Portobello and the quirky fruit machine symbols on the side. I wonder what the story behind them is?

World seems to be blowing up so I took the day off work. Hung out with my daughter, made cake for my partner. Most excellent.

First week of #marathon training complete. Upping distance on long run from normal Sunday 10-miler. Negative split on pace to finish feeling strong. #runningchat #running

I've never seen a piece in Science that raidates more emotion- to use the author's excellent phrase, "volcanically pissed off". Essential (if awful) reading. What's Happening Inside the NIH and NSF | Science | AAAS www.science.org/content/blog...

I’m glad to see this rise for PhD students. Back in 2000 my NERC funded stipend was £6,500/year (when the UK median annual wage was £18,800). I was living on the poverty line.
