Take flight with this landmark 2014 Nature paper by the B10K_Project. Using 363 bird genomes from 92% of avian families, it builds a taxon-rich backbone tree for future comparative studies. A must-read for the holidays : www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Meet the shoebill, the swamp’s coolest and most intimidating resident! Known for its prehistoric vibe and that unmistakable bill-clattering sound—a cross between a machine gun and nature’s applause. Fun fact -- its genome has been sequenced by the B10K Project unlocking secrets of avian evolution.

When you catch yourself wondering how you and the person across the table aren’t different species yet, remember that it’s been 24-34 million years since the Gray Seal and your furry friend begging for scraps diverged from a common ancestor.

The mute swan is a large waterfowl, native to Europe and Asia, known for its S-shaped neck and unique vocalizations, despite its 'mute' name. With a wingspan reaching up to 2.4 meters, it is one of the heaviest flying birds. EBP is proud to have it in its list of sequences from VGP.

"Species definitions are ultimately the foundation for conservation policies and action, and the accurate characterization of biodiversity is therefore a vital first step for comprehending and addressing the magnitude of the escalating extinction crisis." Read more: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

🎶 Two turtle doves 🎶 We didn't have a partridge to show but the turtle dove is a beautiful symbol of love and tranquility. With its gentle purring song and graceful presence, it adds a touch of serenity to the landscapes it inhabits across Europe and Africa.

It might feel like it’s only taken four years, but don’t worry—it’ll take closer to 42 million years before you and the person across the table are this different. Trust us, you have more in common than you think.

Watch out—these saiga antelopes aren't just about their unique, bulbous noses! Known for their wild and dramatic arguments, they’re nature’s own drama queens. Bonus: Their genome was sequenced by the Zoonomia Project unlocking deep insights into their evolutionary story.

The European mistletoe, is more than just a holiday tradition. This evergreen plant is a hemiparasite, drawing nutrients from host trees, yet still photosynthesizing on its own. Found across Europe and Asia, it's steeped in mythology and medicine.

It might feel like it’s only taken six years, but don’t worry—it’ll take closer to 42 million years before you and the person across the table are even just this different. Trust us, you have more in common than you think.
