I am so excited to be a part of this wonderful paper led by the very talented @mkobas.bsky.social and my fav collaborator @tilbegoksun.bsky.social. I am generally a big fan of beautiful descriptive statistics and Mert did an amazing job in this paper! Enjoy!

Researchers at Annenberg and @umdscience.bsky.social show that proposed NIH funding cuts lead to an estimated $16 billion in economic loss and 68,000 jobs lost nationwide. Learn about their project and view the interactive map here:

“The ecosystem of research and the creation of new knowledge in universities has been so powerful for American prosperity, American freedom, American ingenuity. To have that disrupted by government overreach is a disaster for this country.” —Wesleyan University President Michael Roth on @msnbc.com

Another wonderful collaboration with the best team! Congrats Ibrahim for leading this effort.

Join us! Science Homecoming helps scientists reconnect with communities by writing about the importance of science funding in their hometown newspapers. We’ve mapped every small newspaper in the U.S. and provide resources to get you started. Help science get back home 🧪🔬🧬 🏠 sciencehomecoming.com

Another great approach for scientist opeds, writing for your hometown paper about the importance of science funding. (Ungated copy in the original thread)

I wrote a column in my hometown newspaper about the importance of keeping SCIENCE FUNDING in our community 🧪 More soon about the power of writing back HOME 🏠 www.chicagotribune.com/2025/02/15/g...

What is your university doing to protect, support, or at least community with faculty right now?

BREAKING: The court has granted our request for a temporary restraining order to stop the federal government from unlawfully sharing personal financial data with DOGE. This must now stop, pending a full hearing, and any downloaded data must be deleted.

This is a list of blockbuster drugs in 2024. Guess how many can trace their origins to NIH funded research? All of them.

UW-Madison on proposed NIH indirect cost cap: “This proposed change to NIH funding–UW–Madison’s largest source of federal support–will significantly disrupt vital research activity and delay lifesaving discoveries and cures related to cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and much more.” 1/x

Wonderful explainer on indirect costs by Dick Aslin open.substack.com/pub/dickasli...

The United States by virtue of a bipartisan commitment to biomedical research created one of the most vibrant, productive research ecosytems in the world. People came from all over to study here, do research here. It was a monumental accomplishment by both parties. 1/

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

These great research institutions in red states are slated to lose about $1B in NIH research dollars

This indeed effects science globally. Cost-cutting logic does not work. NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 invested.

"Trump's actions must be called out for the damage they are doing" @thelancet.bsky.social www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

The NIH capping the indirect cost rate (IDC) for grants at 15% can best be described as a direct assault on Universities. It’s such a bureaucratic, innocuous sounding thing that actually means that research universities will be kneecapped. Thousands of employees across the US will lose their jobs.

Looking forward to this!

Shame on this administration! A global disaster, voluntarily caused, is under way, we cannot stay silent. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/06/h...

I think this drawing of Laura Bell is the sweetest thing I have seen in a while 🧠❤️, and the ideal graphical abstract for the paper we published about #EEG and #fNIRS last October www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... #brain

US Senate Democrats on Monday afternoon “to sound the alarm” that Elon Musk and his DoGE team were reportedly granted access to the federal government’s central payments system, which handles nearly $6 trillion and the vast majority of all federal disbursements.

So Elon Musk, a foreign-born individual who has not been elected, vetted by Congress, or passed a security clearance, can access gov’t computer systems including private payment records & personnel files? Imagine if a Dem prez gave George Soros the same power. Dem electeds need to yell about this!

Remember when Hillary got pilloried for using a private email server because it compromised gov't info? Musk's team is allegedly moving sensitive data onto their own servers. We need Dem Congress people on TV shouting about this and we need rallies & protests all over this country!

this is what we want to see. tariff the shit out of elon’s companies www.businesstoday.in/world/canada...

Now updated with the breaking news that Elon Musk's team has been granted full access to the Treasury Department's federal payment system.

🗣️ Language is widely distributed throughout the brain 🧠 In a recent correspondence in @natrevneurosci.bsky.social, we suggest that there is no 'language network' in the brain. What appears as such is an inevitable illusion created in part by the methods we use. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Breaking news: A judge temporarily blocked President Trump from imposing a sweeping pause on federal spending, after the new White House policy disrupted programs that fund schools, provide housing and ensure low-income Americans have access to healthcare.

Dear fellow scientists, Go talk to the press about what is going on. Talk to local news about how it will impact jobs. Be specific, but don't pity yourself. Instead focus on how your own situation affects local jobs, the national economy, beating the growing scientific race with China. Suggestions:
