OLED Switch sold. Bring on Switch 2

Feel like it was a given the Polygon of old is gone, but when you make up phrases like "triple-A writers" you know it is well and truly doomed to become a part of the Valnet machine. Also incredible to say this when you fired all the excellent writers and editors who were irreplaceable talent.

“We’re pleased to announce that AAA writers will now cost the same as AAA games: $80.”

Support independent games media!

I have seen like 5 clips of the Ethan vs Hasan debate and seems like it played out exactly how you would expect.

HBO realising a year too late that J.K. Rowling's moldy stench lingers on anything she ever touched and are now probably stressing about the longevity of doing this.

The amount of people who do not understand why people are being drawn to Reform is more alarming than the fact people are being drawn to them in the first place.

I was charmed by Lost Record's little fire starters and the game's ingenious camcorder implementation to make home videos. Chef's kiss

The key question following GTA 6's delay. Will Judas finally release lmao

This industry is ridiculous and cruel because what do you mean I effectively just said goodbye to an editor over email because their new owners are so bad that I won't want to write for them, even if I had the opportunity (although I am probably blacklisted at this point).

Anyway Blue Prince and Expedition 33 for GOTY

Lmao never been more wrong about GTA 6 coming this year. Also really bad for the industry. It needed the boost the game would give it

Not the death knell, but the beginning of the end for Starmer. Fingers crossed someone with their head on straight can rescue Labour sooner rather than later.

BTW this is one of Labour's safest seats so this is actually an indicator that they would be hammered in a general election.

I still think about Giant Bomb watching EA's Battlefield 1 E3 stream and producing comedy gold from it all the time. Snoop Dogg, Zac Efron, Weed, everything about it was peak entertainment.

We had always planned to launch today, but it seems more necessary now than ever, so here goes: @brianbarnett.bsky.social, @hokutolucas.bsky.social, and I are launching an independent games website today called Skybox. You can read our welcome letter/mission statement here:

lmao

In amongst the rubble, if you are a studio (big, small, one person in their bedroom, whatever) in the UK and planning to launch a game this year I'd love to talk to you about something I have been working towards for 18 months that no one is doing that I'd like to kickstart later this Summer.

Well, that was a dream come true. Knew it wouldn't last, though. Out of a job at the moment. But I'll always be doing patreon.com/gamemess

The thing is there are so many of us who have been laid off or are freelance now that all specialised in different areas: reporting, breakdowns, news, video, podcasting, editing, etc that when put together we could probably make something better than a lot of what is out there now.

In the midst of games media crumbling all these companies that are turning into SEO and Discover-bait farms, this is what Google thinks of your entire business model. It won't last. You need to be where people are and deliver them quality, not hope they come to you.

Literally one of the best.

The inevitability for all these companies that have no one/very few people working at them (GAMURS, Valnet, etc) is that they will bring in cheap labor, then AI, then readers will clock it is AI/poor quality and blacklist the site in their minds. Just look at the response Duolingo got this week.

Anyway once things quieten down in a week or two for me, I'm very much keen to work on something with other journos to figure out how to fill the hole being left by a lack of first-hand actual reporting and features.

don't let anyone spew the narrative that this wasn't inevitable. every single person i've met has sacrificed their health, their weekends and evenings, to try to do their best work while the people at the top squeezed them with stupid goals and sudden editorial changes. talent is everywhere you see

Another great day to read this.

Also to anyone who has written for Polygon, full time or freelance, save your work now as PDFs. Opera GX lets you do it, alongside a number of other browers/apps. Chances are articles will be gone or changed author before you know it.

Anyway in 6-12 months time, Polygon will look like every other Valnet site pumping out slop, and writing think pieces with no actual argument or point just to hit keywords and Google Discover while writing "news" about fast food menus and popcorn buckets.

i was just thinking earlier this week "man, i love my job and i'm so excited to jump into summer blockbuster season!" ... and now i dont have my job so :)

I'll say more later, but I no longer have a job. I'm looking for work, as are *so* many of my amazing colleagues. I have lots of ideas and things I'd like to write. I'm really in shock.

Truly the worst news you could think of. Heart goes out to everyone and to all the writers who feel forced to come onboard because there are less options than ever only to get paid a slave wage and burnout from insane job requirements.

Anyway, gaming is getting too expensive for most people. @charalanahzard.bsky.social's video yesterday does a good job of explaining how people will just sit on their phones now for hours, and getting them to play a game is a lot harder than watching someone play: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HM9...

Xbox hasn't really been trying to sell you hardware for years at this point, but yikes these prices are crazy tbh.

Borderlands 4 looks great. Seems like Gearbox has kept a lot of what made Tiny Tina's Wonderlands so good, while fixing most of the outdated combat, UI, and game design problems that were still lingering in Wonderlands and Borderlands 3. Excited for September.

OMG thank god they changed the Borderlands UI. I simply couldn't handle having to deal with that for a sixth game.
