Please note, the National Weather Service has NOT yet been granted a public safety exemption, despite the order reading: "This memorandum does not apply to military personnel of the Armed Forces or to positions related to immigration enforcement, national security, or public safety"

Federal hiring freeze extended through July 15, per executive order issued minutes ago www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

NOAA to decommission 14 datasets related to earthquakes, oceans, satellites, agency announces nesdis.noaa.gov/about/docume...

“The Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System provides critical infrastructure that supports national security, economic stability, public health & safety, and responsible coastal management. Eliminating or reducing funding would have far-reaching consequences to our community and economy”

NEWS: NWS suspends weather balloon launches at select sites due to staffing shortages "Until further notice, the National Weather Service (NWS) may temporarily reduce or suspend scheduled radiosonde launches at selected NWS upper air sites due to staffing limitations or operational priorities."

Several Regional Climate Center websites are inoperable after funding lapsed April 17. These sites are the hub of widely-circulated charts of weather/climate data. The Western Regional Climate Center site is still functioning (funded thru June 17) but some tools shared across centers are broken.

The Western Regional Climate Center has a notice on its website saying it may become unavailable on June 17. #weather #climate #DOGE

Howdy folks, As the most of the data and tools used by the office are currently no longer available, services provided by the Office of the Texas State Climatologist will be drastically impacted to discontinued due to the laps of federal funding for the NOAA Regional Climate Centers.

Just in: NWS says radiosonde ("weather balloon") launches may be reduced or suspended at "selected NWS sites" due to "staffing limitations or operational priorities" www.weather.gov/media/notifi...

I use these websites daily to add context to my digital weather forecasts. These regional climate center websites will be sorely missed.

4 of the 6 RCC's (Southeast, Midwest, High Plains, Western) are currently down. It is unclear when (if) they return. Thanks, I hate it.

🤬 There go three of the six regional climate centers. Do note the Southern Regional Climate Center also has a funding lapse today and their site could go down at any time. The other two (Northeast and Western) will have funding lapse on 17 June 2025. 🧪

BREAKING: A National Weather Service offices in California announced service changes after the Trump administration fired hundreds of meteorologists. The Chronicle also obtained an agreement between the weather service union and the agency, detailing operational changes at weather forecast offices.

Science is in dire straits in America. And it’s not because of the science or scientists.

Some news. Those of you that utilize the cli-MATE tool from the Midwest Regional Climate Center will no longer have access unless funding is restored before the 17th. A huge loss.

"Effective today, sources tell Science, NSF’s division of grants & awards is returning all grant proposals previously approved for funding and awaiting final signoff to program officers who oversaw the initial review. In the meantime, according to those sources, NSF will not make any new awards."

“The Post spoke with 10 employees across the Weather Service …. Concerned with leaks to the media, the administration is installing monitoring software on NOAA employees’ devices to track their communications, two current employees said.” Reporting by Scott Dance… wapo.st/44sg8lC

I want to thank @sfchronicle.com for actually publishing these files (the passback yesterday and the agreement today). Too many outlets publish stories based on these files but don’t publish the files to actually read them.

Story coming shortly.

The @sfchronicle.com has obtained an official agreement between the National Weather Service employees organization and the agency, detailing operations and service “options that can be consistently applied” across all weather service offices at various staffing levels after massive federal layoffs.

The Sacramento weather service office just sent an email detailing product changes amid "critically reduced staffing" Highlights: Phone lines no longer answered Reduced staffing from 6pm to 6am Forecast discussions issued only 1x/day Limited social media posting Advisories mainly issued by day shift

Lowlights: * Only 1 per day hand-edited forecasts * Permanent 1 per day balloon launches if 25%+ vacancy at office * No balloon launches if an office goes to 3 shifts/day * Reduced shifts * Combining offices The world's example for weather services is being destroyed.

The Northeast RCC operates ACIS/xmACIS, widely used by the weather and climate enterprise. The western RCC just updated all of their maps and products, a good chunk of it in the cloud. Midwest and High Plains RCC have a lot of great ag products @mattlanza.bsky.social @spann.bsky.social

OMB wants a cost-benefit analysis to keeping the GLM on the next round of geostationary satellites by May 9. A lot of work to accomplish, but I'm sure some has already been done. They say that the next satellites shouldn't have GLM unless it saves more lives than denser ground-based networks.
