All these years of Erdogan presidency and we have not seen a convincing college diploma. Now they are trying to invalidate an Ekremoglu candidacy by declaring his degree not valid citing technicalities about a transfer. Sigh.

It’s hard to do this without self aggrandizement or feeling like I’m trading on other people’s stories, but here’s a personal experience with authoritarianism, death threats, and courage. A thread:

Elephant in a china store but the elephant hates china. Now, they are decimating education research. Just yesterday, I was telling sub about how the Erdogan era ruined education in Turkey. Authoritarians targeting science, research, and education is not random. www.propublica.org/article/depa...

This thread 😂 Oh, Philly, never change!

www.bbc.com/news/article.... Sri Lanka’da trafoya maymun girmiş ama seçim günü değil. 🙉

I don’t care for football too much but hey, this city needed this catharsis. I don’t live anywhere near Broad St. anymore but I hear fireworks all around. Time to party in Philly! Conquer those poles! 🦅

When I was an int’l relations major in the early 1990s, if you told me that a world where an American government declares war on NGOs is possible, I’d LOL at your face. If Erdogan is a pioneer in this area, we can expect Trump backed and supported NGOs replacing others and dominating that sphere.

Whoever came up with the list is apparently not any kind of scholar. Scholars are familiar with the concept of statistical bias, which is often discussed in papers on any topic. The censorship is outrageous, but it is also very ignorant.

Please listen to @kimlanelaw.bsky.social explain that while the eank insanity of the past 12 days is new to America, it's familiar in Hungary (and Poland and Turkey) down to every particular. When lawyers are more dangerous than tanks in the street... podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

This is a big deal. Those who work with the youth in any capacity would know.

Google celebrating the Birds win. 🦅 You can say many things about Philly but the way they celebrate victories is unparalleled in the US. It is very Turkish soccer fan-like, so feels like home!

As a D voter, I got many texts calling Harris genocidal and urging me not to vote for her. Many people who cared about Palestine possibly boycotted. Sadly, we were choosing the least worst and any boycott vote was a vote for 🍊. And here we are, this was not hard to predict.

Campaign to smear Blake Lively didn’t make it to my TL but if any of it is true, it is very concerning first as a woman but also as a citizen because it has huge implications in pubic opinion manipulation. We really have to be smarter about our media/social media consumption.

In 2016, we were in the thick of Turkish government’s retaliations against Academics for Peace (who opposed violence against Kurds); it was desperate times. It is shameful similar silencing and censoring is happening in American universities now and does not bode well for democracy in the country.

End of an era. I wish I could be optimistic and hopeful about what comes next. It will be hard times ahead, at least in the short run. Inshallah hard times bring about better days.

Anybody familiar with the Turkish version of this will be concerned that this will become his slush fund. It’s amazing how they tout smaller government and then try to go into government ownership. fortune.com/2024/09/05/t...

NEW: Private schools across the South that were established for white children during desegregation are now benefiting from tens of millions in taxpayer dollars flowing from rapidly expanding voucher-style programs, a @propublica analysis found. www.propublica.org/article/segr...

Good move from Istanbul mayor & major figure in CHP, Turkey’s main opposition party, Ekrem İmamoğlu. He went to Mardin today & met with Ahmet Türk, the Kurdish elected mayor whom the ruling party, AKP, had recently removed from his post. Good to see this show of democratic solidarity.

I’m thinking to myself what might be the same and different (for the better or for the worse) in the 47 term compared to 45. One thing I resolved to do, for my sanity, is to keep my outrage and my reactivity to a minimum. Because they/he feed/s off of it and it is not productive.

We will likely see high levels of self censorship because there will be consequences to express/support views that do not align with Trump. When this happened in Turkey, it was not good but not surprising. But it is very un-American -we’ll see how far the 1st Amendment takes us.

When you consider this story along with the AI vs. Creators plagiarism/ownership discussions, the misogynoir part is somewhat highlighted.

The “for some reason” is -you guessed it- 💸💸💸. A little dent in the money fueled Saudi PR facade. A disgrace for the TFF.

What a mess… UPenn is really failing badly in this Academic freedoms and donor funding balancing act.

Israel bombs Al Azhar Uni in Gaza. If Western academics and universities do not condemn this, I don’t want to hear the word decolonization from anyone ever again.
