#historyeducation #historyteacher Worth knowing?!

Looking forward to this!

Looking forward to teaching my GCSE class the story of Sophie Scholl this week for OCR B. This story resonates more powerfully than ever. Shout out to @thehistoryguy.bsky.social whose History Hit podcast with Frank McDonough inspired this collaboration with @benbassett.bsky.social #historyteacher

Thank you @catherinepriggs.bsky.social & @geraintbrown.bsky.social for the wonderful #aspiring /new to post #seniorleader #CPD I’d highly recommend these research-based webinars full of practical suggestions, useful reading lists & meaningful activities & discussions. Lots to take away & think about

Good piece by @steverollett.bsky.social, although quite why the importance of grade reliability needs to be spelled out to Ofsted in this way is incomprehensible to me, and seems to be at the heart of the problem with the latest proposals.

Hear hear! Such events feel exceptional because participation isn't driven by performance standards, generic leadership, nor even "improving my teaching", but by deep curiosity about history: a shared passion for curricular theorising & analysis of why this or that configuration lands with pupils.

#historyteacheruk #Soane25 Looking over the shoulder of the young man writing here is sad for a history teacher I feel, but it makes teacher conferences like yesterdays all the more important!

People, places and a pinch of discipline - @richkhistory.bsky.social rounded off the day perfectly. If we can live by that as history teachers, what wonderful imagined historical worlds our pupils will be helped to build. #Soane25

Total joy to attend and present at Ark Soane today. @michaeldoron.bsky.social has done such a special thing for the history community and deserves huge congratulations. Hats off to you, sir 👏

'People, places, and a pinch of discipline.' A great way for @richkhistory.bsky.social to cap off a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting day at #Soane25 Plenty of ideas to take back to the team about worldbuilding in our History curriculum.

Jonnie Grande's thoughtful session exploring the tension between world building through concrete personal stories and the scale of international history was so useful, and really resonated with my experience. #Soane25

Lien de Jong's story, used by @edurbin.bsky.social to humanise, the Holocaust really moved me. Pondering how we keep the personal and the sense of scale and geographical diversity and the sense of process when teaching this. So challenging and so important. #Soane25

Very inspired by @michaeldoron.bsky.social 's use of the story of Hannah Mitchell to build the world of early 20th century socialism and suffrage. Clever storytelling makes her perspective so obvious, as though pupils are looking over her shoulder. #Soane25

Buzzing with thoughts after a fabulous conference #Soane25. Excellent workshops and keynotes, and so wonderful to catch up with many lovely people. Thank you @michaeldoron.bsky.social and team!

It's quite something when Eamon Duffy is only one highlight of a conference! Terrific day at #Soane25. Brilliant work from the history team there once again.

My colleague and I were discussing the other day how to help our pupils situate each topic in time using timelines. Hannah Whittle and @tomallenhistory.bsky.social sharing how they have been working on this #Soane25

The genius of @michaeldoron.bsky.social outlining the transition from Yr8 to Yr9. Curriculum coherence at its finest. #ArkSoane25 #ChangingHistoriesKS3

On my way to #Soane25 Can't wait! Safe travels everyone.

🏺Incredibly excited to welcome Prof. Aston to our school for our 2nd free Community Lecture 🥳 A fantastic opportunity for our students to learn from academics. Plus it’s FREE & open to ALL! If you’re local to Reading come along. No need to book & everyone welcome! #Historyteacher #AncientHistory

So, nearly 400 people have done our Ofsted Grade Confusion quiz The average score is 3 out of 5 - meaning people are on average getting TWO wrong! Question 3 (below) is causing particular problems - just 37% got it right!! I only know one person so far who has got full marks …

This will be a super role for a Geographer, working in an exciting school with a fab head of Hums. #geogchat

I am really looking forward to this! If you haven't signed up, do. @hughrichards.bsky.social is a master of stories.

Welcome to @bsky.app @culhamstgabriel.bsky.social ! Do give them a follow folks. They're doing important work on curriculum debate.

These are the examples that Ofsted need to be bombarded with over the consultation. Anyone with half an ounce of sense will see that it is a nonsense that one of these is better than the other.

I recently said that the current Ofsted framework is the most intellectually rigorous one we’ve had and several people disagreed, but looking at what’s come out today I’m all the more convinced that it’s true. You don’t have to like it, but it’s intelligent. The new one? Don’t know where to start.

*** NEW POST *** Why I'm worried about Ofsted stripping away deep dives. Are we allowing the impossible dream of a perfect accountability system to lead us somewhere worse than we are now? www.tes.com/magazine/tea... Via @tesmagazine.bsky.social

This comment in the Ofsted proposals is very revealing. It rests on the assumption that Ofsted can and should 'support continuous improvement and drive high and rising standards.' I am far from convinced that this is the case or that such an aim is compatible with other Ofsted responsibilities.

Already amusing myself with the "guess which of the descriptors is meant to be better" game for the new Ofsted toolkits.

Forgive the quote-post, but this idea comes up often enough that it makes sense for me to write a stand-alone thread on here that addresses this (probably) inaccurate extrapolation of cognitive load theory. So here's a thread on why asking pupils to follow as a teacher reads probably is fine. >>

Geographers! If you want a culture focusing on subjects – their substance, origins & purpose; wide reading, debate & connection with scholarship (rather than generic pedagogy or rehearsing 6-mark questions) check this out. @jessangell.bsky.social is terrific & well known for putting subjects first.

Fantastic as ever from @counsellc.bsky.social This year I’m leading on our Y7 RPE curriculum & have been amazed at how rich our enquiries can be & how hooked our pupils are. There is brilliant work happening thanks to the #TeamRE community. Here’s to more rigour & a National Curriculum 👏

Give RE the status, coherence and rigour it needs, by ensuring all teachers of RE, primary & secondary, know what pupils have learned in earlier years and so can use and build on it. Our current system is inequitable. Countless children miss out. @culhamstgabriel.bsky.social @retoday.bsky.social

We've had over 200 sign ups on this already. The question is will @hughrichards.bsky.social surpass @paulalobo.bsky.social 's 288? Over the moon with all the interest in this #ChangingHistoriesKS3 webinar series. Plenty more to come in 2025 inc @catherinepriggs.bsky.social and @egcarr.bsky.social

Does the story of the Reformation need to begin with the Black Death?

One for the Medicine Through Time #historyteacher people…

🚨A brilliant opportunity for a #geographyteacher to join the Humanities department at River Academy 🚨 Real scope to contribute & develop our #Geography curriculum, fantastic students & colleagues, great CPD internally & across the local trust. Feel free to DM! ⬇️ mynewterm.com/jobs/150728/...

It was a pleasure to be a main speaker earlier today at the @ttrhistory.bsky.social conference. I spoke about 'Managing the interplay between substantive and disciplinary knowledge'. (1/5)

Signed my ECT up to this. Great programme for history teachers. #historyteacher

Really pleased to share this story on Sophie Scholl for our OCR GCSE Nazi unit. Loved researching and writing for this one and collaborating with the wonderful @petejackson.bsky.social. I hope you all like it!
