Ha, makes me feel better to know I'm not alone.

So much to take from this. It's absolutely fascinating to think about how natural complexity and evolution led to the animal brain. I wonder if the step to achieve this mysterious level of "agency" in AI will be a difficult hurdle to cross, or if it will be possible at all.

How painfully bland.

First story of yours I read. What amazing creatures.

Don't want to bury our heads in the sand, of course - we must stay informed and vote accordingly. But sometimes, the best (and only) way to shape the world is through our actions towards the people, animals, and community immediately around us. And through your art, of course!

Great plan. And if you haven't already, consider cultivating your algorithm and social media feed so you're subjected to more positive/practical news. Makes a world of difference for staying sane.

I admire how 25% of what you say always has this subtle, yet comfortable, dissonance with the other 75%.

Excellent adjectives - I would also add "eternal" and "all-pervasive." Similar to microplastics. But yes, there are controls to minimize what we generate and put in ourselves. I really appreciate your posts that are educational and realistic, but also action-focused and hopeful.

Reminds of something Stephen King wrote regarding The Stand... "there's something a little depressing about such a united opinion that you did your best work twenty years ago, but we won't go into that just now, thanks." That said, I believe your most popular work is ahead of you.

Hmm. I was aware PFAS was in other products (fire fighting foam, non-stick pans, etc) but had no idea it can be found in fertilizer! You're right, another reason to grow a garden or support a local farmer, if one is able.

What I find interesting, and hopeful for humanity's future, is DeepSeek's reason for open-sourcing their model. They are attempting to convey a sense of friendly competition to advance the field and improve trust (since apparently there is no stopping competition even if models are closed-source).

Interesting. If this is possible, imagine what we could do engineering an intentional "stop sign planter" design.

Do you think the developers of Dark Souls intended it to be a metaphor for persistence in the face of adversity, or is that just what the community picked up from it? Either way, definitely wisdom to be found in that lesson.

Well that guy's getting a follow.

I do appreciate posts like this, and am glad you appreciate it too.

An age-old struggle, I imagine. Have you ever changed your stories based on what sells or is more likely to be read?

Dig this lovely first line. By Gunnhild Øyehaug.

Ghoulish is the right word. Sorry you both had to deal with that dehumanization.

"Writing is a quest for love." I like that. I have these same doubts all the time. I tell myself I write for *me,* that it is irrelevant how many other people actually read my work. But the truth of that certainly wavers from time to time.

Ghoulish is the right word. Sorry you guys had to experience that.

I would have lost it, especially for insulting Clarke.

Unspeakably tragic.

What I find interesting about reading older books is how it seems that throughout human history people seem to harbor complaints and worries about the younger generations, or fears over new technology... It's honestly comforting.

All I can say is I've walked away from books like The Psychographist, Negative Space, and Tender is the Flesh feeling more fulfilled and at peace than I expected to. It's a haunting feeling, a bit morose, but I feel like I'm more understanding of the world around me.

Yes. Excellent. Lots of bangers in CHM.

Is it the type of story you could combine with another idea down the line and create lovely little story infusion? I feel like sometimes marrying two ideas/hooks gives a story the oomph it needs. #writingisindeedhard

One of my favorite scenes is when Zakalwe is on the ship and meets the guy who gets fulfillment and happiness from having a job cleaning tables. Don't have the quote on me this second, but those are my favorite Culture moments.

The whiplash of plastic waste suddenly having value, and how we're forced to face how dependent and addicted our civilization is to the material. Speaking practically, I think a moratorium on specifically-named single-use plastic items would be a good start.

So, I finally subbed to Sunday Morning Transit (when Ken Liu had a story there I couldn't resist anymore). Loved your story.

You are correct. “[I] Am departing presidential councils. Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world." That is what Musk said after leaving Trump's advisory council in 2017 after Trump pulled out of the Paris agreement. www.theverge.com/2017/6/1/157...
