Or if someone says anything about a jaw, or scales, or bones, they'll jump in with, "you know who doesn't have those? HAGFISH that's who!" and we are a little overdramatic in response and they feel smug.

They are... not adroit. Like a friend will be over for dinner, and ask about favorite animals, and they get a mad gleam in their eyes, and try to argue that they were ASKED, that makes it OKAY to talk about it at dinner, otherwise it would be RUDe and I've told them not to be rude etc.

Early Covid, school was closed and kids were home as we tried to work. LOTS of nature documentaries, including a couple on deep sea animals and scavengers on whale falls. After several meals hearing about slime and how hagfish tie themselves into knots to tear off flesh, the house rule evolved.

We have a house rule of "no talking about hagfish at the dinner table." The kids take any opportunity to slowly bend an unrelated conversation into a mention of hagfish. They get points (uncountable) if we don't see it coming.

A U-pick orchard by us (Morgan's of California, Winters, CA, zone 9a-9b) has them! Fun, tasty, kid favorite. Smaller than other berries, so need to pick more for volume. A little harder to tell when ripe. They seem to be a nice size, about person height, not sure if they need pruning.

We have done this for Valentine's day at least several times! Tasty and fun but can be a bit chewy.

The shift in the connective tissue might also change your shoe size! I went from a regular 8.5 to a wide 9. All new shoes needed, sob. May the changes be easy to deal with, and hoping for all the best for your family.

What are they like in person? Are they like smaller dogs and horses where the same amount of animal but much more highly concentrated (and under higher pressure) in a smaller package? Or are they chill?
