You can still respond to the consultation process, too - until Tuesday...

After rigging what they claim is an "open" consultation in favour of GenAI companies the Government now wants to use AI to flatten the huge pile of negative responses. www.thebookseller.com/news/governm...

Ian Fleming's original James Bond novels haven't aged well. For example, Moonraker - published almost exactly 70 years ago in April 1955 - features a villain who's a super-rich industrialist and rocket-maker seeking to cause chaos because he's a secret Nazi. Such a silly idea!

Remember when Magic: The Gathering was proud of its gradual original world-building and slow-reveal stories?

Nate Silver has to believe that Nate Silver and people like Nate Silver are geniuses who deserve everything they got because otherwise he’s just one of a couple hundred guys who did some interesting stuff with baseball statistics and then claimed he was a data genius so could cover all fields.

Lilith and the Weeping Wings

Labour doing a stellar job of maintaining Tory cuts on art and culture and then blaming artists for it.

You can't make a political thriller with no actual politics and expect it to be good

Some of the longest lasting cultural stalwarts surrender to the power of billionaire wealth consuming everything www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Years ago, after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, I interviewed a former fb employee, and I remember her continually emphasizing that these tech bros weren't evil geniuses, but were, in fact, dangerous because they were utterly clueless, totally reckless, and had too much power.

It's wild that there's simply no such thing as safety in the gaming industry. Game fails? You're out of a job Game flourishes? You're out of a job www.rockpapershotgun.com/netease-rewa...

Both boys and girls would be hugely benefitted by a social change of what "intelligence" means to value emotional and social intelligence. Too many boys are told they don't need to care about understanding people, too many girls that they're not intelligent despite having excellent emotional skills

Well that didn't last long. King has since put out a second video in which she conducted a full re-enactment, of what she said happened but also included a lot of information that undermined her own story, then deleted both videos, then uploaded an apology in which she denies ever accusing him.

hey for anyone who might want to actually own their kindle books instead of renting them, or who might be thinking of switching to kobo etc and will want to convert them to epubs, you now only have one week before amazon kills your ability to download its ebooks www.theverge.com/news/612898/...

Personally I suggest we try getting a LOT more people to viscerally hate Elon Musk and his eminently loathsome-looking little rich boy rats

For anyone apart from a clique of Silicon Valley weirdos to ever consider doing this would require yet another pandemic-level event shutting us all inside for a year. That's how absolutely starved of actual personal contact millions of people would have to be to build any kind of user base.

It's been said before, but it really is striking how even within what he's pitching as a potentially limitless VR world beyond our wildest imaginations, the only things that Zuckerberg can imagine are new ways to do meetings.

Conclave was just fine, an incredibly paint-by-numbers political "thriller" that wasn't clever enough to line up all its pieces. That it managed to get Best Picture suggests a pretty dismal year of film writing quality in 2024.

Protect Pedro Pascal at all costs. Gladiator II is bad but he is a gem

Help I've been exposed to Baeddel infighting content and now my eyes are bleeding

The Guardian is going into partnership with an ecocide-plagiarism company. Handy that the story includes an email address at which we can contact them with our views: 1/3 [email protected]

The answer is "no," which is why I will not be clicking on your Substack link, sorry.

I think it might be time for Kevin Feige to call it quits and hand over the reins

This is my reminder to shift my e-book purchasing off Amazon. I'm going to finish the collections I have and then moving permanently to @bookshop-org.bsky.social for eBooks and @libro.fm for Audiobooks. Amazon is a scourge on the industry. Everyone moving is a positive. gizmodo.com/amazon-is-ma...

It's time to #JoinAUnion Most UK unions will have deals on this week, like this one with my tech union for three months membership for free: prospect.org.uk/join/ Never been a better time to join in and get organised representation ✊

Google - grow the fuck up. Apt chapter I just read in a book. It explains the power of cartography (making of maps) and why the naming of places is important. In case you are one of those thinking renaming a body of water is not a big deal. Taken from ‘Serpent, Siren, Maelstrom and Myth’.

if you don't click through to the article you'll miss that 1) this guy looks EXACTLY like you would expect a guy who owns a gold cybertruck to look like and 2) this is the "threatening" sticker lmao

Absolutely astonishing how Daniel Greene managed to further salt the earth responding to the Naomi King allegations in just a *one minute* lawyer-written statement. I don't think I've ever seen a response go so badly. The comments are universally turning their backs on him.

Funny how Peter Mathieson never mentions cuts to his own obscene and ballooning pay package as a potential source of cash to plug Uni of Edinburgh funding holes www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinbur...

The big takeaway here is that Reuters won this case against the AI company on grounds they violated fair use—the judge found the AI company was guilty because, in using copyrighted works to generate its output, it “meant to compete... by developing a market substitute.” Huge.

“Without joy, we wither” is my new mantra for tough times
