Twister towers and anchor Yankers courtesy of Baker STEM Lab and @ekuwah.bsky.social inspiration. These were so fun but very challenging. They had many fails before successes started happening!

“We built a model of a cardboard house. Our plan worked because we used teamwork. Another idea is to make more space. The purpose of the challenge was to make hinges and a door handle. I am grateful for my teammates because we did succeed.” - 3rd grader (✏️reflection) #STEM #Makedo #EduSky

“I created a building. It was hard to put the roof, but it was ok. I’m wondering if we can make a sign? I learned about how working together can help you a lot. I am proud of myself because this was really fun.” - 3rd grader (✏️reflection) #STEM #Makedo #EduSky

“Today’s challenge was to build a hotel. The things that worked well were the teamwork & the walls. We did not have enough time for the roof. We could work faster next time. The thing I learned was teamwork. When I finished, I felt good also proud.” - 5th grader (✏️reflection) #Makedo #STEM #EduSky

“Today’s challenge was to build a hotel with screws. The hinge for the door worked pretty well. We could have communicated better so we would get more work done. We finished, but the roof kept on falling down. We all were happy that we finished, & we took a picture.” - 5th grader (✏️Reflection) #STEM

“Today we built a hotel. Our plan worked because we used our time wisely. It was hard to put holes in the cardboard, but I still did it. Next time I would try to finish the roof & build better walls. It was a lot easier to use the screws than the clips.” - 4th grader (✏️reflection)

“Today we made a hotel out of cardboard and screws. Our plan worked because everybody was doing their part. I prefer working with screws than clips. Next time I will make the doors the same size. I felt happy because we finished.” - 3rd grader (✏️ reflection) #Makedo #STEM #EduSky

✏️”We built a hotel. It was fun. Our plan worked because we used teamwork. Next time we should make the hotel higher. The most important part about engineering is teamwork. I am proud of using teamwork so we can finish.” - 3rd grader (reflection) #Makedo #STEM #EngineersWeek #EduSky

Super Sunday! 🙌🏾 @drcmamaj.bsky.social invited me to be a guest on her podcast! We were born in Warrensburg, MO, went to the local University, and became educators. Hope and family guide our journeys! Listen today! ▶️ youtu.be/Le_ruIRW7qg?... #EduSky #STEM #MyNameIsAnAddress #MamasPortraits

Where was I at 6:30 a.m. on Friday? K-5 students used #BoxLox clips to co-construct cardboard hotels during the last rotation. I was adding photos, sketches, & reflections to the “Engineering Wall of Fame” before the students arrived! #SWIRL in a #STEM commUNITY #EduSky

To: Engineer Teacher ❤️ From: [1st grader] Happy Valentine’s Day! #EduSky #STEM

✏️”Today’s challenge was to build a hotel. The purpose…to learn about structural engineering. What could be improved…use more support... When I finished, I felt great because out of all the years I’ve been here, I’ve never finished it, but now I did.” - 5th grader #BoxLox #STEM

✏️”Today’s challenge was building a hotel. I noticed teamwork makes it easier to build. I could improve measuring the height so we could put the roof easier. It felt so good climbing through the door.” - 3rd grader (reflection) #STEM #EduSky #BoxLox

✏️”I created a cardboard hotel. Next time I would make it bigger. I learned that things have to be sturdy. I am grateful for my team because we ended up making an amazing hotel. Engineering is the best because you can always learn from your mistakes & make cool things.” - 3rd grader #STEM #EduSky

✏️”Today, we made a cardboard hotel with a rectangular base. I learned that communication is key when it comes to building big things like this. Next time we will make it larger & taller. I am proud of my team because we were able to finish in time & we all fit in it.” - 5th grader #STEM #EduSky

✏️“Today’s challenge was to make a mini hotel out of cardboard & #BoxLox clips. The hotel turned out amazing. We could improve it by making the walls sturdier. I learned how to use teamwork more. My teammates & I felt like real engineers once we were finished.” - 4th grader (reflection) #STEM #EduSky

It was a challenging PROCESS for students to select scrap cardboard pieces, use tools to punch holes, twist pipe cleaners, & build a model of a Disney Skyliner gondola cabin. 🚫Tape 🚫Glue ⏰30 min The crash-tested PRODUCT included movable doors, windows, & more! #STEM #EduSky

🗣️1st graders dramatic play… “You two be the students, and I’ll be the teacher. What’s 6+25?” “That’s right! It’s 31! Now, let me change it to 29+6. What does that equal?” “Yep! It’s 35! Who wants to be the teacher now?” #STEM #EduSky

We took a one-minute virtual field trip to Disney World to listen to the architect & the engineer as they unveil the Skyliner gondola cabins. Then, students built a model with cardboard & pipe cleaners. Winnie the Pooh & Stitch are the most selected crash test dummies. #STEM #EduSky

Screws were the cardboard attachment technique introduced during the last rotation. Our Disney Skyliner models are being constructed with pipe cleaners & cardboard. Students watched @carlyandadam.bsky.social make a hinge before building & testing a Disney-themed cabin. #STEM #EduSky

The new crash test dummies are ready for the next 7-day rotation! They’re sitting in their seats and waiting to ride on the cardboard Disney Skyliner models my students will be creating & testing! Stay tuned… Thanks for the real-world connection, @adventuresmstarr.bsky.social #STEM #EduSky

From ice cream cones… to beds … to baskets… to fruit roll-ups…to tents… I heard hundreds of creative descriptions of the zip line devices made with cardboard and #Makedo tools! 📸: K-5th grade examples #STEM #EduSky

✏️ “I noticed people’s LEGO zip line device kept exploding. I’m wondering if we could try this again out of cardboard & glue.” - 3rd grader (reflection) Me: We don’t have enough drying time for glue (before we test it). Let me introduce to #Makedo tools & screws. #STEM #StudentLed #EduSky

How it started: ✏️ “It was hard to make the LEGO device move or speed up because it kept falling apart. Next time we should make a zip line device out of cardboard because… it’s unbreakable.” - 4th grader (reflection) How it’s going: ✅ Makedo screws & tools 🚫glue 🚫tape ⏰ 30 minutes #EduSky #STEM

🎥 “Where are they now?” 🙋🏾‍♀️ Here I am! Thank you again to everyone who submitted a recommendation and helped me win the national #LCOY grand prize. I am forever grateful for the community's support and the life-changing experience! #EduSky #STEM #STEMEd youtu.be/5u9gMTYz4cM?...

🐻 Create & test a #LEGO device that safely transports a bear down a zip line. 🔁 Make improvements to the device, and test it again on the zip line. ✏️ Sketch a diagram and write a personal reflection about your experience! #STEM #EduSky

Lots of interest recently around low-tech making with all things paper. Big opportunities for prototyping & creative expression! Need a PDF guide to get students going? Download here ➡️ bit.ly/cardboard-canvas #FutureReadyPeel #MakerSpace #STEM #Cardboard #Origami #PaperCircuits #EduSky
