It feels especially poignant to highlight that all of the “lessons learned” shared in this paper came from our collective experiences conducting NIMH-funded suicide research - and the paper itself was inspired by our NIMH colleagues who are dedicated champions of suicide prevention in the US.

ICONIC: Yosemite National Park workers just hung an upside-down American flag—THOUSANDS of feet up on El Capitan. That’s not decoration. That’s a distress signal. They’re telling us the country is in danger. Are you paying attention? www.sfchronicle.com/outdoors/art...

A leading autism intervention researcher was among the sweeping NIH layoffs last week. My latest for @thetransmitter.bsky.social www.thetransmitter.org/spectrum/aut...

Breaking News: A federal judge has temporarily blocked President Trump’s crackdown on diversity programs, saying it violated freedom of speech protections.

Update: A block on NIH's new policy to slash billions of dollars of research-overhead costs has been extended by a federal judge. The block was set to expire Monday. https://go.nature.com/3XgyvWn

The conclusion of the initial NIH Indirect Cost court case this morning... Great thread outlining the arguments by the plaintiffs and the lawyers for the NIH (who are advocating for the 15% cap on behalf of the Trump administration).

Troubling: Congresspeople say they are NOT hearing from academics, or university administrators. PLEASE SPEAK UP! Oppose these budget cuts to research, health, student loans! www.votervoice.net/APAAdvocacy/... Tell others to do the same!

Agree!

Posting here so I can remember it next time I'm looking for the keywords "tool for selecting the relevant journal for publication" but can't think of the woman's name AGAIN. jane.biosemantics.org/index.php

I would like to express my deep appreciation to the leaders and lawyers who worked so hard on this over the weekend

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out. Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation. Say equity, which a just society should pursue. Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.

Dick Aslin, National Academy member and courageous leader in science, has launched a new Substack. His first post tackles the alarming shift from an administrative to autocratic state: ‘Congress itself has been rendered irrelevant.’ Don’t miss it: open.substack.com/pub/dickasli...

"For any new grant issued, and for all existing grants to IHEs retroactive to the date of issuance of this Supplemental Guidance, award recipients are subject to a 15 percent indirect cost rate. "

+1 yes! New work from our lab also reveals strikingly reliable metalinguistic skill on information structure and acceptability tasks: GPT-4 replicates a striking interaction between them despite the 0-shot, explicit nature of the tasks, & little to no chance of contamination (Studies 1a, 1b). 1/2

Senator Elizabeth Warren sent a letter on Monday to the Treasury secretary demanding answers for why the Dept. of Government Efficiency was granted access to the federal payments system, giving Elon Musk's team a powerful tool that could be used to track and potentially limit government spending.

Apropos of nothing, here's a picture of the mug I drank my coffee from this morning (a gift from my time on study section). Thank you so very much to each person at the NIH for all the work they do and will do in the future

Hey if anyone is considering backing up any datasets for some reason today, the Open Science Framework has free storage up to 5G/private repository, and up to 50G/public repository. (The OSF is run by a 501c3 (Center for Open Science), so if you do this you might also consider making a donation.)

Missed @elmunc.bsky.social’s posts from X. Wish this wasn’t the thing that led me back to them here.

If you can go, go. 5pm today. Last night's cutoff of federal funding by 47 doesn't just mess with the recipients, it violates the Constitution and seizes powers that belong to Congress. It's a dictatorial attempt at consolidation of power in the presidency. www.mobilize.us/climateactio...
