David Enoch points out in 'Is General Jurisprudence Interesting?' that there are no academic journals that mainly do 'meta-etiquette'. Two thoughts: 1. Weirdly, we don't even have metaethics journals. 2. Have I found my new project title? Meta-etiquette? Metiquette? #philsky

With today's new addition, my whiteboard of projects in progress is actually full - a very visual reminder that I'm not allowed to start another Shiny New Paper until some of the old are sent off.

Today, once again, doing research on social norms means I'm writing out a conversation from a Seinfeld scene. (The fabric of society is very complex, George.)

I swore to myself that I was going to do yoga every day of January - no excuses! Then I got sick on January 1st and I haven't been well enough to get up from the couch since. The gods are laughing at my hubris.

I wrote a review of A COMPLETE UNKNOWN: the brand new Bob Dylan bio pic. And I guarantee you it is totally unlike any other critique of the film that you are ever going to run in to. merrillmarkoe.substack.com/p/a-complete...

The best kept secret in Hamburg is that young people can get massive discounts at the fancy concert hall - and because of the average age of classical concert goers, 'young' means under 30. Tonight I am going to a sort-of opera with Marion Cotillard as Jean d'Arc!

I have a great new 'Deutsche Bahn being comically bad' story for those who celebrate. 2 months ago my train journey from Stockholm to Hamburg went very wrong - I got stuck in Copenhagen overnight and arrived home a day late. I submitted a claim for compensation and reimbursement of hotel costs.

I showed this picture to my boyfriend and now he insists that the only present he will accept for his birthday is these cats. All my plans are ruined.

Any tips for German venues that publish think pieces (philosophically inspired but less technical than a journal article)? #philsky

I have to use our uni-connected ChatGPT for something and keep getting sentences like "X plays a pivotal for Y" - it always skips the word 'role'??

Any tips for indulgent cake recipes for a birthday? My Tony Chocolonely caramel sea salt cheesecake is getting a bit too predictable. #Baking

The war in Syria was the first geopolitical development I closely and consciously followed from the start - the Arabic Spring, the protests, the violence, the chemical weapons, the refugees, the rise of ISIS, the effects on politics in Europe. I can't believe Assad is finally but suddenly gone now.

For most of this year I was trying to put my Very Brilliant Ideas into the world while not having a chair to sit on in my office.

Is it impolite to murder someone?

I often dream up quite intense experiences but lately my brain has been gifting me very cosy dreams - living in a house with a big garden in a Swedish village, walking through a shop with pretty trinkets. Last night I simply played Stardew Valley and made a hot chocolate. Thanks, brain!

I still haven't found a cafe with the right mellow background music and a good table height for writing in Hamburg. I'll blame this for any lack of progress.

I'm facing the challenge of going to a 3.5 hour play in German today and will be very annoyed if Duo gives me no XP at all for it.

Last-year-of-job nerves were hitting me this week so I am spending my Saturday updating my research statement, but at least I'm sitting at my home desk with a pot of my Good Tea and have weird oreos and a great Pakistani dinner to look forward to.

It's Philippa Foot week and during a group discussion I overheard a student complaining that philosophers underestimate etiquette because they just focus on dining rules. So proud. (elinegerritsen.com/2024/09/22/i...)

One fire alarm in the communal hallway has run out of battery and has started beeping annoyingly. Now we're playing a game of chicken with the neighbours - surely they will cave before I'm frustrated enough to get a ladder?
