As we reach the end of Pride month (already?!), I'd like to highlight that the friendly grads at Astrobites interviewed me a few weeks ago. It was fun. :)

I used to think that the entire conceit of Jor-El blasting Kal-El into space because he was unable to convince Kryptonian society to act in any way to save itself was dramatic but completely unrealistic. And here we are.

Third trimester makes so little sense. Baby has all her organs by now. Why must she spend 4 more weeks expanding my uterus? My lungs need space to breathe. My skin needs relief from this constant stretching.

Finding out about Gaia at #EAS2025Cork! ☄️ Just announced: Gaia DR4 will be released in December 2026!

The vet came back into the office. "So, your cat was very upset." I said, "Ok, yes, makes sense." "We were able to draw her blood." "Great!" "She did diarrhea, though." "oh no..." "Then she did it again, all over everyone." me: dies of embarrassment 😬

Maybe the best part of the Rubin press conference was this moment at the end when Prof. Zeljko Ivezic finally expresses *in full* what we're all feeling about this milestone. 🔭🧪 @vrubinobs.bsky.social

Third trimester morning sickness is SO MUCH worse than first trimester, omg. Baby is so much bigger so our calorie needs are changing so frequently, but also now my back hurts and my skin hurts etc. etc.

the solar system data from Rubin is going to be amazing. I really hope I and a lot of other planetary scientists still have jobs when it really starts coming down from the main survey. Contact your elected officials to support the NSF and NASA and reject the current administration's budget requests!

amtrak’s marketing team gets it

Spent 30 minutes sanding and wiping cabinet doors and now I'm too exhausted to stand. T-minus 5 weeks -- and then baby arrives and I can have my hobbies back, right?

I suspect that fact that the vast majority of LLM users don’t seem to have received this (really very simple!) message is because the AI companies have a vested interest in us not understanding it. “ChatGPT is smart, it just makes mistakes sometimes” is much more marketable than the truth.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

hahaha wow, doesn't this just sum up the whole subfield?

The other day my bellybutton felt extra stretched (ow) and I was super exhausted. Today this T-shirt that fit fine on Monday is now a bit too small. Baby grew! A lot! Over just a few days!

Be sure to sign the petition. We are facing elimination of high value planetary missions including OSIRIS-APEX, VenSAR (for EnVision), HelioSwarm, MAVEN, Mars Odyssey, Juno, and more.

Wow, that first search suggestion... Grim 🫤

So wow I guess we're officially in month 8 now... Not sure how it's possible for baby to keep growing for EIGHT MORE WEEKS omg

I am furiously, flamingly, incandescently, *supernova-levels* of angry right now. Trump is trying to kill NASA science. And hoo boy, do I have something to say about it. badastronomy.beehiiv.com/p/trump-thre... 🔭 🧪

We're going to learn some tough stuff today about the White House's proposed budget for fiscal year 2026—including what they have in mind for NASA. I'll share what I hear, but remember: CONGRESS decides how much money NASA gets, not the White House. So whatever happens today, the fight continues.

Ok so the NASA 2026 request says funding eliminated for ADAP. I'm guessing the NSF astrophysics grants won't look good either. So, what will expectations look like for faculty apps in the coming years? Will it be worthwhile to scramble extra hard for these now uber-competitive funding calls? 🔭🧪

*speechless horror* (Guys the NASA Exoplanet Archive is in this box. My job is in this box.)

It would be nice if there were more support groups for what’s happening to scientists right now. I don’t need more information firehose or more suggestions for ways to take action; I’m set on both. I just want to talk to other new PI’s about how hard it is right now

I'd planned to do all this leisurely course prep/revision and paper-writing after classes finished... and instead, 90% of my mental space is taken up by "we're NOT READY for the baby yet aaaaaaaaaah do all the things!!!!"

I have tried & failed to find appropriate words to describe this extraordinary article. Suffice to say that if you read it, you will never forget it. Or the little boy at its heart.

New York Exoplanets meeting was great! I learned planet formation is fun. 🔭 Also learned that I never want to live in NYC lol. Too many people! The pavement never ends!

Pregnancy update: now I understand that I actually *did* have a second trimester energy boost. Because now it's all gone. 😭

Pedantic LaTeX tip for astronomers: Redefine these AASTeX macros, which look ugly by default: \newcommand{\farcs}{\ensuremath{.\hspace{-3.25pt}\arcsec\hspace{-1pt}}} \newcommand{\farcm}{\ensuremath{.\hspace{-3pt}\arcmin}} \newcommand{\farcd}{\ensuremath{.\hspace{-3.75pt}\arcdeg}\hspace{-1.25pt}}

President Trump has issued an executive order seeking to block all federal funding to NPR. This is the latest in a series of threats to media organizations across the country. Whatever changes this action brings, NPR’s commitment to reporting the news – without fear or favor – will never change.

🚨No NASA Postdoctoral Program awards will be made under the July cycle deadline 🚨 Unclear if this applies NASA wide or only GSFC. You will still be able to submit an application but it will be reviewed for selections with the November deadline. Start dates no earlier than Jan 2026.

Seems like academic (and career) future is grimly burning, and yet here I am making lists of adorable baby socks and hats. It's a weird feelings combination.

So, what will this mean for tenure & promotion of junior faculty in the next few years? And what will it mean for upcoming faculty job applications? Will the typical standards of merit need to shift?

Say it after me: Chat GPT is not a search engine. It does not scan the web for information, it just generates statistically likely sentences. You cannot use it a search engine, or as a substitute for searching. Now. Please never use an LLM for information searches ever again.

On our tour of the labor & delivery ward today, we got to see the head nurse scramble to switch from saying "mother" to "birthing parent" after a meaningful moment of eye contact. Still got it 💪
