Very timely (if grim, but what isn't these days) from @aslak.bsky.social 👇

The EU’s #cleantech advantages may wither from multiple challenges that businesses cannot overcome autonomously: high energy prices, China’s surging clean tech exports, and Trump’s looming tariffs. New CER policy brief by @sandertordoir.bsky.social and @elisabettaco.bsky.social buff.ly/3QoalFM

Russian influence on Italy, right there

This is truly shameful. Even China and Iran abstained. The US has put itself in the company of some of the worst states in the world - Russia, Belarus, North Korea. Hungary showing its true colours as Russia's Trojan horse in the EU as well.

Investing in the energy transition, cutting fossil fuels imports and accelerating electrification, is investing in strategic autonomy.

Three years on, we should all still stand with Ukraine. "Russia doesn’t have the resources to fight indefinitely against that kind of organization and determination ... Putin can’t win on the ground, but he can win in his enemies’ heads—if we let him."

Global trade in clean tech is growing rapidly, but there is one key exception: China is reducing its imports of low-carbon tech, even as its exports are surging. 🆕 @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social paper by @sandertordoir.bsky.social & @elisabettaco.bsky.social Read here: http://buff.ly/3QoalFM

The EU is stronger in clean tech than commonly assumed. The bloc leads in production of specialised machinery such as wind turbines and hydro energy machinery. 🆕 @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social policy brief by @sandertordoir.bsky.social and @elisabettaco.bsky.social Read here: buff.ly/3QoalFM

I agree. I recall Newt Gingrich, a Trump proxy, saying in 2016 Estonia was in the suburbs of St Petersburg and "I'm not sure I would risk a nuclear war over some place which is the suburbs of St. Petersburg". Europe either wakes up & defends itself, or it will find those suburbs of St P have grown.

Shameful and dangerous.

I take back what I said yesterday. This is even more shameful than Trump's victim-blaming then. Practically every word of this is false, either drawn from Russian propaganda or made up entirely. Is there no Republican in Congress brave enough to denounce Trump's lies & make a stand for truth?

New paper with CER's brilliant climate/energy expert. @elisabettaco.bsky.social The EU will now negotiate its clean industrial deal. We sketch out how promising EU clean tech is and how to do industrial policy well to make the most of it. Vital now the US is ceding the space to China.

The EU's share of global exports in low carbon technologies has been growing more slowly than China’s but it remains well ahead of the US’. New CER policy brief by @sandertordoir.bsky.social & @elisabettaco.bsky.social Kindly supported by @boelleu.bsky.social Read here: buff.ly/3QoalFM

Very happy to see this paper with my colleague and Berlin-based macro whiz @sandertordoir.bsky.social come online! Our key messages 🧵

We shouldn't take anything off the table before the negotiations have even started. It is clear that any deal behind our backs will not work. You need the Europeans, you need the Ukrainians. Extracts from my doorstep ahead of NATO Defence Ministers meeting ↓

> Zelenskyy: “I articulate this very clearly to our partners . . . Any bilateral negotiations about Ukraine without us, we will not accept.” > A scenario in which “the US says, ‘We did the ceasefire, and all of the rest is for you to clean up’ . . . wouldn’t work [for us]”, said one EU diplomat

A recommendation that takes on extra importance after yesterday's US statements on Ukraine. Europe cannot afford to wait to see how much damage any Trump deal with Putin does to Europe, let alone Ukraine, before reacting.

It’s late, but it’s not too late. The Russians are not invincible giants, as their slow progress in Ukraine has shown. But Europeans (including the UK) can’t waste any more time, & need to learn from UA how to defend effectively.

Let’s look at the implications of the US funding freeze on international democracy support and what this means for the EU. 🧵

Very pleased to release this new long paper on where EU defence is heading. A thread with my key points: www.cer.org.uk/publications...

There has been much hand-wringing among EU policy-makers since US tech firm CEOs started lining up behind president Trump and, in some cases, urging him to force Brussels to back down on regulating US tech giants. In my latest piece for CER, I argue this is a dangerous approach for US tech firms. /1

Trump has plenty of ways to pressure Brussels to scale back its enforcement of EU tech laws. How can Europe respond? #EUTech 🇺🇸 🇪🇺 New @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social insight by @zach-cer.bsky.social Read here: https://buff.ly/4gYGwal

Deindustrialisation angst grips Germany. In a new study, Brad Setser and I unpack how badly Germany's trading relationship with China has backfired, and how its industry might weather the second China shock. With terrific accompanying reporting in Handelsblatt/FT. 1/ www.cer.eu/publications...

🎙️ New @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social podcast 🎙️ In our final episode of 2024, six of our researchers reflect on the Europe's EU’s past year and what to look out for expect in 2025. Listen here:

Where do things stand one year after Poland got a new government? The biggest takeaway from Warsaw is that democratic restoration is a long, difficult and messy process. 🇪🇺 🇵🇱 New @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social insight by @zecsaky.bsky.social Read here: https://buff.ly/4ggGpXb

To make #CBAM a success, the EU should use CBAM revenues to support investments in industrial #decarbonisation abroad. Its climate diplomacy should make use of financial aid & technology transfers. New CER policy brief by @elisabettaco.bsky.social & @aslak.bsky.social: https://buff.ly/4fVeThI

Well worth reading, this. @elisabettaco.bsky.social and @aslak.bsky.social argue complaints about CBAM from middle and high income countries don't hold much water, but the EU should respond to those from poor countries

To avoid backlash against its #CBAM, the EU should acknowledge this policy’s regressive impact on some of its trade partners & use CBAM revenues to mitigate the impact. New @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social paper by @elisabettaco.bsky.social & @aslak.bsky.social Read here: https://buff.ly/4fVeThI

The AI Act gets the basics of better regulation right. But the Commission and member-states need to implement it in ways that support European innovation and economic growth. 🆕 insight by @zach-cer.bsky.social Read here: https://buff.ly/4gm1hw0

The idea of borrowing to fund European defence is gaining momentum, led by a coalition of the willing. As @sandertordoir.bsky.social and I argued in our paper last month, this has two key advantages: - No need to wait for consensus at 27 - Include non-EU members www.ft.com/content/1698...

My colleagues @elisabettaco.bsky.social @aslak.bsky.social have written an excellent piece on the EU's CBAM and the backlash among the EU's trade partners. They argue the EU needs to try to mitigate the impact with financial aid, capacity building and tech transfers mailings.cer.eu/publications...

Super interesting thread from Elisabetta on CBAM with lots of great data on what EU trade partners are most affected. And key policy ideas on how Europe can mitigate resulting spats with its partners.
