If Germany could maybe keep it together tomorrow, that'd sure be swell.

Literally the Bond villain nightmare scenario I've ranted about in private ever since I found out about Starlink: Elon will get people dependent on this tech and then eventually threaten to turn it off the internet if they don't do what he wants.

I don't think it's a coincidence I've crawled back to watching Star Trek: The Original Series right now. Given everything that's going on right now, it's comforting to imagine a future in which everything is just fundamentally okay.

I have a new paper about these cute little guys (and some girls)! White-necked Jacobins are interesting because all males and some but not all (!) females are brightly colored. The scientific question is why some but not all females? (Img credit: Kate & Sam)

In my German class today we had to all pick a public figure and describe them anonymously to practice using adjectives. I picked Santa because, well, he's easy to describe. 3 of the 5 other people who shared their responses described Trump 😅 He's not just preoccupying the US...

“Holy hell — that was my response,” one FAA official tersely says, describing their initial reaction [to Musk's purges + SpaceX takeover at the FAA] Yup, boiling confirmed 😅

The Denglish idiolect my partner and I sometimes speak at home is truly cursed. Best (worst?) example is describing birds: Schau, der Birb out there ist so süß. Awww, jetzt borbt er sich auf! (Look, the birb out there is so cute. Aw, now he's borbing himself up) I swear I can be serious sometimes.

The thing I think I'll never get used to about science writing is emailing scientists out of the blue to ask for their unpaid time. I guess communicating with the public is part of their job. But still. It feels very... brash. I'm so thankful people are usually enthusiastic to share their work.

TLDR: a run-in with an itty bitty black hole about the mass of the Chixulub impactor would gravitationally rip your cells apart, starting with your brain. Fun. arxiv.org/abs/2502.097...

I've been flying since I was a baby and have never been scared to fly before. But seeing the FAA layoff, which looks about as chaotic as all the other DOGE cuts, and hearing that the guys who routinely blow up rocket ships are going to be helping make flight safer has me nervous.

Watching very nervously as I think about flying back to the US this year... apnews.com/article/doge...

Space... space... space... dumpling? Ok you got me, I wanna know about the space dumplings.

If I was this beautiful I'd also just walk up to people with cameras to improve their shots

Thank you to all of the researchers who made great recommendations in this thread!

Disturbed by the amount of videos/pics of Elon's 4 year-old circulating rn. Look, hate on Elon all you want but leave the little boy out of it — or at least blur/black out his face. Just because his dad isn't respecting his privacy doesn't mean we shouldn't.

I spoke to Kate Nave about the FEP last year and it is conversations like that one that make me love what I do. This is definitely going on my to-read pile!
