Here's a quick look at how science fares in the proposed Trump budget, from William Broad, @katrinamillerphd.bsky.social @kchang.bsky.social and me. nyti.ms/437jhFw

I'm sure there are government programs that should be streamlined and/or cut because they're ineffective. But I'm also sure that's not why the Trump administration is going after clean energy and the EPA.

The new Silent Spring:

Thrilled to see my book "H Is for Hope" on the longlist for the Massachusetts Book Award!

Because they felt that air pollution isn't killing enough Americans, the Senate voted to overturn an EPA rule that limits toxic air pollutants emitted by industrial facilities, marking the first time Congress has weakened protections under the Clean Air Act.

Spring is here and it's toad mating time at the local pond!

Citizen science surveys of car license plates reveals *alarming* decline in UK #insect populations www.theguardian.com/environment/...

The only thing Congress can seem to agree to do these days is further screw things up:

This story just made me want to cry.

"It is hard to shake off the feeling that, in the new-look US, climate data is the enemy."

I can think of another way to do checks and balances.

What you don't assess will still hurt you.

What the U.S. is using its declining international clout to push for:

There's a pattern in this administration -- stretching back to Trump's complaint that the problem with COVID was that we were testing to see who actually had it -- in which they think if we don't pay attention, it's not happening. The Lack of Object Permanence Presidency

Oh look! Just what the world needs -- another shopping tool!

Tied a record today at 93 in Tampa. More impressive, it’s the 8th 90 degree day this April, breaking the record for most 90s in April. And we will see a few more before May! Also it’s the 2nd earliest we’ve reached 93. The earliest was 94 earlier this month!!

If there is a Rubicon, we have officially crossed it:

"The biggest consequence might be losing entire ecosystems before scientists have a chance to understand them."

“The ongoing global coral bleaching event is the biggest to date,” NOAA scientists said.

This would be cartoonish if it weren't so corrupt.

"When Bloomberg recently analyzed earnings calls of S&P 500 companies going back to 2020, it found that the companies talked about the environment in the first quarter of 2025, on average, 76 percent less than they did three years ago."

apnews.com/article/clim... world's biggest companies have caused $28 trillion in climate damage, a new study estimates

The U.N. projects global population will rise by almost a billion by 2037. If low U.S. birthrates are a worry -- and I would argue the opposite -- the obvious answer is to allow in more immigrants. This, of course, is exactly what those who claim to be the most worried oppose.

As it cuts grants to study misinformation, Trump administration, violating a temporary restraining order, says it is not violating a temporary restraining order.

Let them eat cake, I mean toxic chemicals. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/21/c...

$3000 in cash is weird. Even weirder: why does Kristi Noem carry her passport around with her in Washington, D.C.??

Just the group you want giving menstrual cycle classes...

Even George W. Bush understood the value of marine reserves. Not DJT:

Read it and weep.

This is probably one of the biggest stories in the history of American energy. A fully permitted energy project already under active construction, ordered to stop over what is at least publicly just vague claims of issues with permits. What are the issues? Which permits? Who’s to say.

Apparently all it takes these days to destroy American science is a visit from three of Musk's minions:

Donald Trump, unwitting climate hawk?

Feeling safer?

A record increase in the global average atmospheric CO2 in 2024, 3.75 parts per million (previous record was 2.96ppm). The global average is more representative than Mauna Loa, as it is the average of numerous stations located around the world. gml.noaa.gov/ccgg/trends/... 1/

Live in Massachusetts? The state e-bike rebate program just opened today. If it's like similar programs in other states, it will quickly be oversubscribed. Go get in line! goclean.masscec.com/clean-energy...

How many lifetimes' worth of work is being destroyed by all this? And to what end?? www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...

Making corruption pay again.

Trump wants to grant permits for deep sea mining in international waters, which, of course, don't belong to the U.S.

L'État, c'est moi, 2025 edition:

You knew this was coming:

What does it mean when law firms agree to do work “ensuring fairness in our justice system?" That they weren't doing that before??

Interesting thread on the potential upside of the current madness. One must hope for something these days...
