What if we built a new major news and opinion journalism outlet from scratch and used it as a news lab to reform and rethink how we do things, starting first with billionaire-proofing it. And what if we honestly audited our flaws and came together to make the news orgs we want to see?

Fascinating and educational talk the other night from Mia Mask, who's programmed the BFI's current season of Black westerns, followed by a Q&A with Clive Nwonka and @ellenejones.bsky.social. And then Posse on 35mm, introduced by Mario Van Peebles!

Listened to SCREENSHOT from Radio 4. @kermodemovie.bsky.social & @ellenejones.bsky.social discuss time travel in films, with great clips & interviews. Very, very entertaining! (Have to disagree though - time travel is *definitely* possible.) Well worth catching on BBC Sounds. #TimeTravel

This is really good 🙏🏾 Including Sean Baker describing how Mike Leigh is one of his foundational influences (and separating his work from Ken Loach's). And Marianne Jean-Baptiste not making the final Oscar nominees' is just as big a wrong as no All We Imagine as Light! @ellenejones.bsky.social

A lot of silent era white supremacist garbage is able to fly under the radar of modern viewers because they have a very simplistic view of the KKK, seeing only the pointy hats and burning crosses. In fact, the movement as much more insidious and had numerous ways of sneaking its message across.

Oooh, I’m so excited to read this book! Even the back cover is gorgeous! Thank you @sareetadomingo.bsky.social ! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Enjoyed my chat with the courageous and fascinating Oscar nominee Anjanue Ellis Taylor for @guardian Growing up Black in 1970s/80s Mississippi is no joke! And she’s phenomenal in Nickel Boys www.theguardian.com/film/2024/de...

last piece of the year! NICKEL BOYS is out in the UK this Friday, I spoke to RaMell Ross a few months back about the film’s radical cinematography and embodying the inner world of the characters through showing how they observe their surroundings. for BBC Culture: www.bbc.com/culture/arti...

This is a terrific interview with Aaron Pierre. I still remember his strength and fragility in King Hedley II at Stratford East - such a presence.

So, the way to this man’s heart is a nice bowl of porridge…Read my full interview with Aaron Pierre aka the new Lion King in today’s @theguardian.com 🦁👑🥣 www.theguardian.com/film/2024/de...

Some nice pics (all by the v talented @pushgilbey.bsky.social ) of Monday evening’s sparkling MUBI x London Review of Books event at the magnificent Regent Street Cinema, a screening of Guadagnino’s new film QUEER. (Yes, Daniel Craig laughed at all my jokes)

Immensely proud of this issue and all the contributors involved in its making - and to be able to celebrate one of the year’s - nay, decade’s! - finest cinematic achievements. Please amplify and help spread the news!!

No SCREENSHOT on BBC Radio 4 tonight, so here’s a clip to remind you of the treasures that await wherever you pod. It’s Don’t Look Now (1973) co-writer and longtime Nic Roeg collaborator Allan Scott giving the definitive answer on that controversial sex scene…

Working my way through the last lot of #Screenshot podcasts It's so darn good. Loved the interview with Alice Rohrwacher. @kermodemovie.bsky.social and @ellenejones.bsky.social are great together. Lots of thought provoking in-depth analysis and intelligent interviewing. Love it!

Ronnie Spector has what is easily the funniest quote in that new Beatles '64 documentary.

LONE STAR, John Sayles’ neo-Western, has to be one of the best films I’ve ever seen about national mythmaking, the weight of the past on the present, and tribal divisions in border life. Elegantly structured and so well-acted — Cooper, Peña, Morton, McConaughey, Kristofferson, cast of diamonds.

What a brilliant line from the minister at Janey Godley’s funeral “Janey Godley died having forgiven everyone, but she still believed to her dying day that Trump is a country mile away from being anyone who should ever have come near to power.” A perfect goodbye to a great lady RIP Janey x
