Everyone who ever got funding through NIAID should be aware of this bill and start sending messages to their US legislators. The bill intends to dissolve NIAID. This is Project 2025 www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c...

Attention Pennsylvania friends👇🏼

The attacks and uncertainty are not just crushing progress for human health, forfeiting the US leadership role in biomedical science, curtaining economic gain, and threatening many livelihoods...but breaking a pipeline of training that will be very hard to rebuild and which will haunt industry too

Great to see lots of people at the @50501movement.bsky.social protest at Philadelphia City Hall today!

Same in Seattle despite the rain!

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

Hearing from multiple folks - mass layoffs at ASPR happening now. Emails going out *on a Saturday evening* to inform staff they’re being exited, nearly all probationary staff gone.

I have been talking to the media, Time, Fortune, NBC, etc., to explain how the onslaught on science and NIH will impact the health of all Americans. Everyone knows someone who has cancer, heart disease, or depression. Spread the word about how cutting science impacts all. time.com/7216299/nih-...

Yes, and this is super-important. People don’t know what’s happening. Most of the country has no idea that American science — cancer cures — are being shredded. They really don’t know! The job of all scientists 🧪 in this moment should be to get the word out.

ATTENTION (PLEASE SHARE) If anyone has or knows of any positions that might be appropriate for the NIH staff members who were terminated, please post the information in this thread. There are lots of talented and accomplished people who may be looking for new opportunities.

Half of EIS, the CDC's renowned "disease detectives," gone. These folks respond to emergencies in the US and around the globe, and are now in tatters.

I’m gutted. OPM fired about 25% of my office today. I can’t even describe what I witnessed today. So much cruelty from above, but so much love and support inside the office. It makes no sense. We aren’t even paid out of appropriations funds. We work on “soft money” reimbursable agreements.

If you are an NIH or CDC scientist that lost your job, we have a home for you at UTHealth. I’m hiring physician scientists and we also have transplant ID fellowship slots open. Contact me. #IDSky #MedSky

Indirect costs support our entire research infrastructure. Without indirect costs, we wouldn’t have been able to develop this vaccine against H5N1 bird flu. If indirect costs are cut, we won’t be able to prepare and respond to our next pandemic threat. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Gene editing technology began by people studying salt marshes. Ozempic began by folks studying the venom of Gila Monsters. Support for basic science has empowered us to understand our world. Tethering it to applications health has transformed and saved countless lives.

Another assault on US competitiveness at a time when biomedicine is roaring with innovation, an own-goal in a high-stakes international tournament. Of course the real losers are American people needing medicines and cures. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/...

Just learned from NPR that the federal government is the largest employer in the great Kansas City area, for example. I found it helpful to be reminded that, of course, this isn’t just about people who work and live in DC. Federal employees are in all of our communities.

“Senator Patty Murray, Democrat of Washington, said in a statement late Friday that the move could “dismantle the biomedical research system… Just because Elon Musk doesn’t understand indirect costs doesn’t mean Americans should have to pay the price with their lives”

1/ Super excited to see this work from Dr. Kei Haniuda in my lab come together - check it out! Kei was curious about how rotavirus-specific IgA responses are generated in the gut. He found that anti-RV specific plasma cells appear in the MLN and Peyer's Patches very quickly - faster than IgGs

In case you need these as well #IDSky

This account is for sharing info with US scientists, both extramural and intramural to NIH, about attacks on science in the US. Education is power, and we can help advocate for science and medicine together. 💪🧪 We are a team of NIH people. Please ask us questions you might have.

We have two postdoc positions in the lab: We are looking for neuroscientist with expertise in circuits, and for molecular virologist. If you are excited to apply your expertise to questions in neuroimmunology, please reach out for details. Please retweet.
