I am writing for substack now! I hope you'll enjoy my newest post about chasing the feeling of flow. open.substack.com/pub/emilenel...

I was watching the Office, the one where Michael and Jan take a client to Chili's and we spotted a cameo from my table. The guy I got it from on facebook marketplace said it was from Applebee's but he was wrong, apparently. How much blossom awesomeness has this table witnessed through the years?

Tabitha has officially been a 100% indoor cat for over a year now.

My camera roll these days is just photo after photo of mystery plants that I'm trying to identify to see if I need to pull them out of my woods or not

My favorite sort of youtube to watch is Midwestern white guys named Steve who are building backyard ponds and powerwashing sidewalks.

Color changing pond lights!

I finished my limestone patio and my little water feature pond and started planting a pollinator garden, which hopefully will fill in over the years and give the patio a more private feel. I really like it all. Feels like it was always meant to be here

I planted native blue flag irises last year for the first time. So pretty!

A millions-year old trilobite fossil in a paver on my patio

My limestone patio is complete! It was a lot of work but I really like how it turned out

A new to me flower popped up in my yard---never seen one of these before! My camera ID'd it as an "Eastern Bluestar", a native woodland plant

My sons and I have been working on building a patio out of a pile of old limestone pavers I found in our woods. It's not done yet, but it's coming along! In this photo, we are in the process of "grouting" it with our own mixture of sand, crushed rock and clay from the pit that will soon be a pond

When it comes to home improvement projects, it always has to get uglier before it gets prettier.

Since we moved into this house last year, I have been looking for the perfect railing to go between our kitchen and sunken family room. Found one this weekend! Wrought iron with a floral motif. It came from a house built in 1973---mine is from 1975 so it looks perfect here, like it's always been here

A little scene from my backyard...a huge and beautiful Japanese maple tree, a freshly cleaned pond, a rhododendron in bloom and my seating area, which consists of two vintage 1950s wrought iron butterfly chairs and wrought iron slate-topped side tables----all found on curbs in other people's trash.

My rhodedendron bush is blooming!

Poet's daffodil, spotted deep in my neighbor's woods. It was so fragrant!

Fungi spotted in the woods

Midwestern flex.

Dear god let this man cook.

My house showed evidence of once having window boxes on the windows a long time ago (based on screws and hooks left in place). I put some new window boxes on and it just feels right. It's such a lovely thing to see when I look out my bedroom window.

I installed window boxes and planted geraniums, marigolds, tulips, lavender and strawberries in them. They look so prettier and will look even prettier as they fill out

I've had this Christmas cactus for years and never saw it bloom. The little African Violet is a more recent addition but never bloomed until now either. Maybe they are friends and encouraged each other.

Pope Francis Dies Rather Than Spend Any More Time With JD Vance thehardtimes.net/culture/pope...

There was a big stack of flagstone pavers piled up in my woods when we bought the place...the neighbor said there used to be a limestone patio in the backyard that they replaced with concrete. I'm going to put them to good use here with a patio, and also add a little wildlife pond and native plants

Last year I spent my gardening hours cleaning the beds of our new home out---removing invasive plants, poison ivy, overgrown shrubs, stumps, etc. After all that, last fall I spread literally pounds of native flower seed. It's so exciting to see little seedlings pop up this spring!

Talking to JD Vance would destroy anyone's will to live.

I planted lettuces and spinach in the window box outside my window, with dreams of opening the window to pick fresh salad greens whenever I want a salad.

A couple of days ago, as my husband and I were sitting down for dinner, we got to see an amazing sight---a flock of 6 wild turkeys take a stroll through our backyard. There were 5 huge hens and an absolutely massive and beautiful tom, guarding his harem. Stuff like this is why we bought this house.

This is fantastic. I was born and raised in Iowa and this doofus has been Senator since I was in diapers (I'm 46). This "should" have been a safe and friendly crowd to him, but they tore him a new one. When even rural conservative Iowans are calling Trump and the GOP for going too far, they're toast

For those breaking the constitution on behalf of Donald Trump with the assumption that he has your back: he may. But he’s 78, never exercised in his life, and will be president max another 3.5 years. There will be not statute of limitations for violating it

Someone please name their baby Wink we can’t let that name die.

I was able to find another pair of vintage 1950s Salterini wrought iron "orange slice" patio chairs to go with the ones I already had. I will paint them black to make a matching set. Frank Lloyd Wright was a fan of Salterini patio chairs-good enough for FLLW, good enough for me.

The world's gone bonkers and sometimes all you can do is control your little corner. A scene from my basement---new wall paint, new wall art, 1969 console record player.

None of this will end until the Republicans show some bravery and patriotism and remove Trump from power. It needs to be done.

As an adult, who has gone back gone back to school at 46, and also really enjoys gardening, it's kind of funny to tell myself "If you're good and do your homework, then you can go outside and play for a while, as a reward."

I actually own a fossilized skull from a juvenile fire wolf. My uncle was a collector of oddities, and when he passed away, my aunt gave it to me. The dire wolf story is so interesting to me

There's been times in my life where I've heard a distant beeping sound that I can't find a source to, and it makes me wonder if I'm in a coma somewhere and the sound is an EKG monitor and everything in my life is just a very complex fever dream

I want my government to be boring and competent enough so that I don’t have to think about it every goddamn minute.

One of the most random moments of my life was when I was minding my own business at home one day, in 2018, I think, and I got a call from New Jersey. Almost didn't answer it but I did, and it was Senator Cory Booker, telling me he was going to be speaking at an event in my town. He was super nice.

I'm taking an Anatomy class, and in our lab, we have to dissect preserved cats, who are in poses very similar to this. It is not as cute when my cat Henry lays like this now.

Remember many, many years ago, before his social media addiction started, when Elon Musk seemed like a kind of cool and mysterious global figure/tech genius? Now he's this guy. How embarrassing for him.
