Instead of reproduction pots & pipes, this year we donated archaeology-themed coffee mugs designed by yours's truly to the silent auction held to raise money to help pay for meetings & provide archaeology students a small grant to cover travel conference travel costs, C14 dating, etc. #archaeology

🏺Interesting detail about Rome, a remarkably layered city.

I was at #Herculaneum today. So here’s one of Hercules’ victims: the renewable-headed hydra. A copy of this intricate 2000 year old bronze fountain stands in a cave off the Herculaneum palaestra. The original is in the site’s museum, sadly no longer spitting watery venom from its many mouths 🏺🐍🏛️

Haroldstown Dolmen • Carlow Also known as portal tombs, dolmens generally date to the earlier part of Ireland's Neolithic period. This wonderful example in Carlow consists of a chamber formed by two large, slightly tilted capstones, supported by ten vertical stones. #SpéirGhorm #Archaeology 🏺

A 19th-century archaeological discovery, the so-called Colchester Vase, has recently undergone a re-evaluation that could change perceptions about gladiatorial spectacles in the Roman province of Britannia. www.labrujulaverde.com/en/2025/02/a...

#StandingStoneSunday Two stumps through which Stanydale "temple" can be seen on the horizon. The "temple", which almost certainly wasn't a temple, stands in a still largely unexamined Neolithic landscape of farm houses, fields, cairns & standing stones in West Mainland, Shetland.🏺 #AncientBluesky

#AncientBluesky #RomanHistory #History #Skystorians Did the Romans have a postal system? If so, how did it work? How long did it take to send a letter to your aunt in Gaul? Time to find out! Once you've read the article, please remember to subscribe! open.substack.com/pub/jamescov...

No offense but this is post is kind of the king of missing the point, which is that a well researched depiction, even if fantastical, would have been better than regurgitated hollywood slop. Like, I'm pretty sure the people complaining would have been fine with archaic armor too.

A dragon egg in an Iron Age pit?! This striking septarian nodule, found in Cambridgeshire, formed millions of years ago in ancient seas. Minerals filled its cracks giving it an otherworldly look. Was it a ritual offering or just a curiosity? #FindsFriday #Archaeology #IronAge #Geology

Working on something

In early medieval Ireland, according to early Irish law and practice, one was entitled to a bed, food, and water for washing. At UCD, we found that using a wooden bucket and granite pebbles, water can be brought to 81° Celsius (too hot for a bath!) inside 3 minutes! 1/ youtube.com/shorts/uJyqx...

Friendly reminder that sketch commissions are still open for this price! Here is another sketch example I just made. Something like this would be $10 #lineart #oc #wip #commission #pinupart #semirealism
