Be sure to join us on at @imc-leeds.bsky.social all day on 10 July for back-to-back sessions on "Learning the Middle Ages in the Long 19th Century"!

I'm going to have to travel back in time to have a word with some of these nineteenth-century pamphleteers. You cannot just title a text "An Essay on X" and then have it be 432 pages. That is a book, good sir, and you need an editor.

Looking for inspiration on what to set for my Beginners Old English exam is enough excuse to break out the book pillow. I'm going to assign my students a charter, but which one?

When the local knows your whole crew. Out for drinks last night to celebrate @marisapmichaud.bsky.social submitting her thesis! With @mckeagns.bsky.social @hjparmstrong.bsky.social and not on bsky Dr Alicia Maddalena, Simon Bardon, and Gillian Galloway.

The awkward moment when you out yourself as professional services staff when checking on a book order with your university. Not sure I'll be able to convince them that a £200 book on the print history of Old English is relevant to my job.

York students and staff - our library catalogue is doing some behind the scenes migration to a new platform tomorrow. You'll see little or no difference and there should be no downtime - but: *saved searches won't be migrated across.* So if you have important ones, make a note of them.

Closing tomorrow 11:59pm (GMT) - the Bibliography of British and Irish History (BBIH) is seeking a new section editor with expertise in post-1800 Irish history https://buff.ly/4dzSNzv

Today I became a British citizen. Nobody told me the dress code.

Five minutes after submitting an application to an academic society I get an email back that my app has been received and accepted. Gotta love the administrative efficiency.

"University should be concerned with encouraging rational inquiry and the free play of the intellect; it is not about the creation of useful drones and it’s unfortunate that tuition fees have made the experience to some degree transactional."

Hwæt! For our next seminar Ian Felce (independent researcher) will speak on 'What? Beowulf and William Morris’s New Old English'. In-person at @ihr.bsky.social and online, 17.30 UTC, Weds 11/12/24. Free to attend and all welcome, but please register in advance at: www.history.ac.uk/events/what-...

Part of the fun (frustration) of working on antiquaries is finding out how they got their info. When a guy in the 19thC cites a guy from the 18thC who has copied a 17thC guy but all have misidentified a medieval text, so you end up with a big note about how there is no Ælfric's "Letter to Wulfinus".

Sharing this CFP for a conference being organised by our friends @brendantam.bsky.social and @chloechallender.bsky.social. Great subject and featuring @pseaward.bsky.social as the key speaker. Further details are here: warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/his...

Thrilled that the three panels I have co-organised with Dr Thijs Porck and Prof Matthew Townend have been accepted to #IMC2025! Join us on 10 July for our sessions on Learning the Middle Ages in the Long 19th Century.

This has prompted some great offers of papers on the post-1800 period. More are welcome, and the convenors are also keen to hear from those working on medieval or early modern political and parliamentary history.

I love titles like this. Like, yes, Dorothy Whitelock, please spill the tea on these so-called laws. Go off, sis.
