The OpenFlexure stand at #FOSDEM is buzzing. Come see us in building H. @openflexure.bsky.social

The Internet Archive has to date downloaded 500 terabytes of US government websites, which it crawls at the end of every presidential term. The whole archive is fully searchable. This effort's housed by a donation-funded nonprofit, not a branch of the US government. blog.archive.org/2024/05/08/e...

Hey if anyone is considering backing up any datasets for some reason today, the Open Science Framework has free storage up to 5G/private repository, and up to 50G/public repository. (The OSF is run by a 501c3 (Center for Open Science), so if you do this you might also consider making a donation.)

They're replacing every air traffic controller with ChatGPT and I for one couldn't be more optimistic. It's doomerist to think anything bad will ever happen

I wrote this to survive. I hope it helps you, too.

At some point they’re going to go after Wikipedia and the Wayback Machine. More decentralised global efforts needed. “He who controls the past controls the future.”

They want you to think Community Notes has all the integrity of Wikipedia, but with none of the governance structures that make Wikipedia what it is. To mangle a reference, if they wanted Wikipedia, they would have invented Wikipedia.

Am I crazy for not listening to a fucking word Trump is saying right now?

Just going to reiterate - We are on this bot problem. We shall fight them on the beaches. We shall fight them in the signup process, we shall fight them in the notifications

I hate the 'history will or will not' framing because look around you. Some are still learning that Columbus was great.

People keep using Twitter(X) in the end... Come back here ( ;∀;)

We're apparently talking about automatic follow-backs again, because some people simply can't imagine social media as anything other than a chain email

I think I may have just signed my first ever fiction contract (for an anthology) which contained a long anti-A.I. clause. (Meaning: I promised I didn't use A.I. to write my story, they promised not to use my story to train A.I., etc.)

I'm seeing more screenshots of posts from X than I am actual posts here this morning 🙄 My dears, we left X. Can we not bring it over here, please?

Darn. Sounds like an unviable business model then.

Simply incredible

i just.... it's literally the polio vaccine. how can you be on team polio

Please tell me who first posted this so I can properly credit, bc it made me laugh hard this morning

Like everyone else, I too fantasize about just throwing up my hands and saying 'fuck everything, i'm just going to attend to my & mine's needs' but we fucking LIVE IN A SOCIETY and that's just a silly fantasy. It will not lead to liberation. So we have to do what we can. Each of us.

THIS IS AMAZING NEWS!!!

Beautiful footage….. Humpback whale calf hugs mom ✨🩵✨🤍✨🩵✨

There’s a fascinating interview with Manic Street Preachers in the new Mojo by Dorian Lynskey. This, from James Dean Bradfield, feels particularly poignant. The disappearance of the culture you’re born into & made from can be really disconcerting. It’s pretty much inevitable, but it can really hurt.

Life is short and the world is a dumpster fire, so quit making excuses not to write in that pretty notebook you've been saving for a special occasion.

This is the future I want for us

Hey, writers! Just want to put this on your radar. There's a rash of new accounts here trying to scam writers by pretending to be book marketers. They are generally not legit. You can recognize them because:

I keep trying to write something eloquent and just being tired. History matters. Philosophy matters. Languages and literature matter. Indigenous studies matter. Arts and humanities and social sciences matter. All of them. Signed, a physicist

If you’re afraid that books might change someone’s thinking, you’re not afraid of books, you’re afraid of thinking.

South Korea was able to restore democracy and undo the martial law order because people reacted quickly and decisively. That’s how you protect democracy.

Books. When buying books for gifts this holiday season, please don't buy from Amazon. Please shop at your local independent bookstore/bookseller. Ask for recommendations. If they don't have a particular book in stock, ask them to order it. Support creatives, local businesses, and your community.

Time to post some sky.

Space Japan?

I also got to see the night sky from the volcano tonight.

Today's sky was pretty blue in El Salvador.
