“When fascism begins to creep in around us…. Trusting your instincts, naming the threat and sharing your fears isn't just cathartic - it's empowering. It might even save your life.” No excuses. No equivocation. We call it what it is. And them what they are. Very good letters in @theguardian.com

I have been trying to find the time to move away from the polical hellscape we find ourselves in to finish and share a bluetorial about science. This helps me remember what this is all about. Ironically, it is about the treatment of pain.

Medicaid is not for sale. NASA is not for sale. The Post Office is not for sale. America is not for sale. We have an obligation to resist kings. We outnumber them. And they can be overwhelmed.

1/ Being an infectious disease expert in the U.S. today feels like standing in the eye of a storm. Science should be our shield, but instead, we’re under attack, our expertise disregarded, our funding slashed, and public health increasingly politicized. 🧵

Sadly I do not expect any university will stand up against this. They are all rushing to comply. If you are minority faculty, staff or student you have to develop your personal strategy to survive this new era of academic apartheid. We will survive, regardless. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

A very clear and direct statement of the ongoing coup in the USA. We need more leaders speaking clearly about these events so citizens of the USA and other countries share an understanding and act accordingly.

Keith Haring died of AIDS aged 31 on 16 Feb 1990. One of his last works, Unfinished Painting, was deliberately incomplete, reflecting the devastating, unquantifiable loss to the arts due to AIDS. #LGBTplusHistoryMonth

heartbreaking, but also a reminder of our bedrock principles we can (and must) reject improper and unethical instructions when it would harm patients not only that, we must act affirmatively to protect patients this clarity is liberating www.science.org/content/arti...

Established in 1951, the EIS fellowship program is for our nation’s best and brightest. Abruptly firing these dedicated fellows is unconscionable, ghoulish, dangerous. I’m furious. www.cdc.gov/eis/php/abou...

Thank you @benphillips76.bsky.social @madhupai.bsky.social @gregggonsalves.bsky.social for your vision in these dark times. We stand in solidarity & will work for a more just and healthy society. I draw inspiration from you & my teachers - famous & humble - who always work for health & hope for all.

🧵 Trump’s USAID funding freeze abruptly halted critical global health research, abandoning participants mid-trial. A gross ethical violation. @bachynski.bsky.social & I explain what happened and why it matters @bmj.com . ⬇️ www.bmj.com/content/388/...

"People in the US are now able to access long-acting HIV prevention shots, largely because of research that was conducted in SA and Uganda. Research in SA has also been critical to validating new TB treatments that are currently the SOC across the world." www.spotlightnsp.co.za/2025/02/11/s...

Diversity, equity and inclusion are important values that deserve to be honored in science and societies striving for justice. As scientists we have to continue to call for these values steadfastly. This day and every day. #InternationalDayForWomenAndGirlsInScience #MedSky #TBSky

Listen to @oniblackstock.bsky.social. Your silence will not protect you. Stand up. Find others to stand up with. There is safety in numbers.

Great piece from @benphillips76.bsky.social and UN independent expert (and @taxjusticenet.bsky.social senior adviser) Prof Attiya Waris - why we need to #TaxTheSuperRich! www.ipsnews.net/2025/02/tax-...

Stopping clinical trials with such haste is unethical and potentially dangerous and violates the very principles that all who conduct interventional studies must adhere to. It is sad and exposes ignorance and a complete lack of respect for people!

Withdrawal of funding mid-trial is a serious violation of research ethics and implicates all of us who engage in clinical research. Ethical review boards around the world will have to re-evaluate allowing US-funded projects. The balance between harm-benefit is complexly upended.

"The trial was shutting down, a nurse told her. The device, a silicone ring inserted into her vagina, needed to be removed right away." jesus christ www.nytimes.com/2025/02/06/h...

Private philanthropic organization complies in advance. Just…WOW.

My imagination has wandered to a future where poor people around the world free themselves from having to rely on the US dollar altogether

“My heart is moved by all I cannot save: so much has been destroyed I have to cast my lot with those who age after age, perversely, with no extraordinary power, reconstitute the world.” Adrienne Rich, Natural Resources in Dreams of a Common Language

As an infectious disease doc & public health advocate, the last time felt this demoralized and defeated was after my first round of duty on covid filled wards at peak of the pandemic. Today's assault on public health & the trampling of basic rights of marginalized groups feels just as devastating.

Convo with my friend from Hungary tonight who left after Orban’s election. She said “your head will spin with all the wild stuff they try to pull, new things every day, but don’t take your eyes off the money. It’s all about the money, and what they’re stealing, and for whom.”

Rep. Ilhan Omar: "This is what the beginning of dictatorship looks like."

This energy! The only way to deal with bullies is to stand up to them & fight back. We don’t have time for this because we are trying to improve health, end #TB, build a just society, etc. But now we have to fight this bully before we can get on with our work. Fight time! youtu.be/znWlHBi2764?...

More of this energy. The only way to deal with bullies is to stand up to them and fight back. We don’t have time for this because we are trying to improve health, end #TB, build a just society, etc. But unfortunately now we have to fight this bully before we can get on with our work. Fight time!

Everyone needs to be emphasizing this--including those on the right.

USAID employees overseas are no longer able to access their government security app, which gives them this error code (images provided to me by USAID worker)

Be like this

Exactly 👇🏼

Yes, having lived through the capture of South Africa definitely influences my understanding of what is happening in the USA right now. The scale is larger. The stakes are higher. The villains even more greedy and powerful. The disastrous consequences for citizens will be the same. Fight back!

Vaccines and immunization fact sheets you can't find on CDC website anymore are archived at the link below. May be helpful to bookmark this for future reference. www.immunize.org/vaccines/vis...

Today is my birthday too. Waking up to a Friday night massacre of irreplaceable health data. But I enjoyed watching my Feb1 twin, @taralconley.bsky.social’s magnificent trailer & remembering what needs to be loved and saved in the USA. To celebrate our birthdays please watch & share her trailer.

A major new research project at AHRI, led by Dr @emilybethwong.bsky.social is set to tackle asymptomatic TB, one of the most complex issues hindering progress in the fight against the #TB epidemic. Find out more ➡️ www.ahri.org/groundbreaki... #stopTB #endTB

Because Vichy France is kind of my Roman Empire, I wrote about its emergence as an insult in the era of Trump Deux and tried to think through our attraction to certain historical analogies.

Was great to host visitors from @ahri-news.bsky.social at SATVI for this workshop on transcriptomic and RNAseq analyses! We look forward on collaborating to tackle the critical challenges of asymptomatic TB!

Friends, if you and your patients have been affected by the US government actions this week and you want to tell your/their story, please consider contracting Steven @thrasherxy.bsky.social. He’s an amazing journalist and cares deeply about us. @madhupai.bsky.social @francoisventer.bsky.social

Very excited about this new project that will allow us dig into the biology that underlies subclinical/asymptomatic TB. Even today our @ahri-news.bsky.social team is visiting @tomscriba.bsky.social’s team at SATVI to learn critical transcriptomic pipelines. ⬆️ 🇿🇦🌍multiomics capacity! #TBsky #IDsky

I read this piece by @brittneymac15.bsky.social in @teenvogue.com and it was cogent, informative and caught be up on what I need to know. I cannot stress enough how good @teenvogue.com's political coverage has been over the past 5 years. www.teenvogue.com/story/trumps... - make it a point to read

@ocasio-cortez.house.gov

healthpolicy-watch.news/hiv-clinics-... This is evil, shameful and infuriating. For 20 years my friends and colleagues have devoted our lives and career to HIV care. Very angry to receive message after message today from friends being sent home from work and having to turn patients away.
