Excellent piece on the burden placed on African academics of working with researchers from the Global North “My Flight Arrives at 5 am, Can You Pick Me Up?”: The Gatekeeping Burden of the African Academic www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

I'm #hiring: PDRA to join my #ukriflf project to understand how forest structure, function and dynamics are linked in Europe, using high resolution remote sensing data (TLS, UAV-LS). Based in Cambridge. Please share! 🌳⚡🛰️🌲 Full details: www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/50447/ #pdra #forests #lidar

Google, Microsoft, and Meta's increasing use of data centers has resulted in increased air pollution from extensive fossil fuel energy consumption and associated public health costs related to treating cancers, asthma, and other similar issues, valued at over $5.4 billion in the past five years.

Diversity is our greatest asset, even if the government disagrees… They not like us! POC in STEM are here to stay. They tried to rig the game but you can’t fake influence! Mustard on the [Be][At] bro. Happy Black History Month!

Our newest paper led by Julián Tijerín-Triviño finds that #climatechange is slowing the productivity of European #forests: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/geb.70011 A 🧵: We used 3 surveys over 15-30 years from >13,900 NFI plots in Mediterranean, temperate and boreal regions (1/5)

The most pressing need is missing. UKRI must re-establish a culture that: actively addresses bullying, halts the hemorrhaging of experienced staff, and shifts the balance between 'the centre' V councils (as per the Grant review) to lower stress on key operational staff. wonkhe.com/blogs/eight-...

It's been a long time since Private Eye's satire has made me audibly wince, but this is so to the point if it were a knife people would demand it be banned.

Excited to give a keynote at the event: "Putting Science into Action: building a research system to address environmental crises" Oxford Martin School @ox.ac.uk 20 March 2025, 09:30-14:00 All welcome to attend. Places are limited, so register now: www.agile-initiative.ox.ac.uk/events/event...

If you think, as I do, that GB News' open hostility to the LGBT+ community and Black and Brown people tacitly encourages violence we've made it very easy for you to tell Sky, one of its biggest advertisers, to stop funding hate. Please use and share. action.goodlawproject.org/sky-stop-fun...

We're VERY close to 60,000 complaints. Help us make this complaint the biggest in Ofcom's history 👇 goodlaw.social/i1m8

5 women spoke up about their professor's sexual misconduct. LSE's response? A botched investigation and keeping him in post. We're supporting one of the women as she takes action. But we need your help 👇 goodlawproject.org/crowdfunder/...

I’ve been adding slowly to my #Quaternary science starter pack but aware lots have joined since I made it. It is (not accidentally) biased toward female scientists, so in case you need to diversify your follows, take a look! Keep sending suggestions - I’m happy to add you/them. go.bsky.app/71XJ4jH

New opportunity for catalyzing conservation research in Africa: www.cambridge-africa.cam.ac.uk/initiatives/...

Don't kid yourself that all academics are on the same page right now: there were faculty that were openly against DEI when the first versions emerged, decades ago -- I was there. My guess is that they're pretty chuffed these days, the ones that aren't dead anyway.

When can we get Elon Musk to take over Elsevier?

Delighted to see this major initiative finally out. Led by @stefanopuliti.bsky.social and leveraging the huge @3dforecotech.bsky.social community's efforts we present a major AI benchmarking dataset with classification results for point cloud tree species identification. (1/3)

Someone who has brought in tens of millions of dollars and has 40 to 60 people in his group is obviously a big deal at any institution. So, for that institution to let him go says a lot. But another institution is just going to take him in and act like nothing happened? #AcademicChatter #AcademicSky

The only surprising thing about this is that the university has actually taken action despite the $$ behind this researcher. So many have suffered from or know about problematic men in universities, and usually nothing happens and you're gaslit/ignored.

<1 month to apply! Want to learn how to make the most of ecological data using supercomputers? Check out the projects. When a single billionaire can accumulate more money in 10 seconds than their employees make in one year, while workers struggle to meet the basic cost of rent and medicine, then yes, every billionaire really is a policy failure. Read our op-ed here ⤵️
