SUNDAY SEVERE THREAT‼️There is an increasing threat for severe storms on Sunday, especially near and S of I-80 where the Storm Prediction Center has an Enhanced Risk (level 3 of 5). Areas north of I-80 are in a Slight Risk (level 2 of 5). See image 2 for an explanation of the SPC’s risk categories.

WIND ADVISORY: 6 PM this evening through midnight. West winds will increase to 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Gusty winds may blow around unsecured objects.

3:30 PM Radar Update -- Rain continues to spread across Chicagoland. Now seeing heavier downpours in McHenry, Lake (IL), DeKalb, Kane, NW Cook, DuPage, and LaSalle. Showers will end from west to east this evening.

The NWS has confirmed 8 tornadoes from Wednesday’s storms… three of those in Gary, Indiana.

As expected, it was a busy night across Chicagoland. We're seeing several reports and images of damage in the south suburbs and in NW Indiana. So far, I haven't heard of any injuries, thank goodness. We'll have a full recap and a look at the damage coming up on the news at 9 PM.

A strong storm located Crystal Lake is moving NE at 50mph. Expect heavy rain and nickel sized hail as this moves through eastern McHenry and northern Lake Counties.

A strong storm located Grand Ridge is moving NE at 45mph. Expect heavy rain and penny sized hail as this moves through LaSalle County.

A strong storm located over Genoa is moving NE at 55mph. Expect nickel sized hail as this moves into northwestern Kane and south central McHenry Counties.

A strong storm located over Malta is moving NE at 60mph through DeKalb County. Nickel sized hail possible.

Know the difference between a WATCH and a WARNING. Severe storms are expected late this afternoon into the early evening.

SIGNIFICANT SEVERE RISK TODAY‼️ 🔺TIMING: 4pm-8pm 🔺HAZARDS: Damaging winds, tornadoes, hail The tornado risk has increased, especially south of I-88. SPC now has a 10% tornado risk for the south and SW burbs. The rest of Chicagoland has a 5% tornado risk. Have ways to receive severe weather alerts!

Severe storms possible late Wednesday afternoon into early evening. SPC has most of Chicagoland in a Slight Risk (level 2 of 5). Damaging wind gusts, hail, and isolated tornadoes are possible. I’ll have an update for you in the morning!

WEDNESDAY SEVERE UPDATE! The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded most of Chicagoland to a Slight Risk. This is a level 2/5 on their severe risk scale. Damaging wind gusts will be the primary concern, but a hail and tornado threat will be possible.

The National Weather Service has confirmed 4 tornadoes touched down in Chicagoland Friday night. EF-0 in Yorkville EF-0 in Bartlett and Hanover Park EF-1 in Cedar Lake EF-0 in Schererville and Merrillville

The Storm Prediction Center has most of Chicagoland highlighted for a severe storm risk Friday night into early AM Saturday. There are still quite a few uncertainties regarding the severity of the storms we'll see here, so check back for updates as we get closer to!

We'll have to keep a close eye on the late Friday/early Saturday timeframe. Models are hinting at the potential for strong to severe storms in or near Chicagoland. Below is the Storm Prediction Center's Day 6 Severe Weather Outlook for Friday/early Saturday...

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY for all of Chicagoland from 9 AM Wednesday to 3 AM Thursday. Travel could be very difficult, especially during the Wednesday evening commute. Snow will be heavy at times. Most areas will end up with 3-6", but an isolated 7" will be possible.

Confidence is growing that heavy snow will impact travel in Chicagoland on Wednesday. It seems reasonable that at least parts of the area could see 6+". The big question mark is how far north that rain/snow line goes... which will impact snow totals, but cause ice concerns.

WINTER STORM WATCH‼️ WHEN: Wednesday morning through late Wednesday night WHAT: Snow accumulations of 6 or more inches possible. Snowfall rates of an inch per hour are possible. IMPACTS: Travel could be very difficult. Hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening commute.

GUSTY EVENING AHEAD! West-northwest are expected to ramp up Thursday evening, mainly between 7 PM and midnight. Gusts may occasionally exceed 40 mph.

9:33 PM UPDATE: We're seeing reports of crashes around the Chicagoland area. Roadways are becoming icy as freezing rain/drizzle continues to fall. Precipitation will taper off from west to east overnight, but roads/sidewalks/untreated surfaces will remain slick into early Thurs.

LIGHTNING! We have a few lightning strikes near the Illinois/Indiana state line in the south suburbs. Heavy rain with this...and remember, this is freezing rain. Icing concerns are high with this cell moving into Newton County.

A Flood Advisory remains in effect for areas in the green polygons until 1 PM. Creeks/streams may rise out of their banks. Standing water possible on non-paved surfaces due to frozen soils. Flooding possible in poor drainage and urban areas.

‼️FIRE WEATHER WATCH‼️ A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for most of Chicagoland from noon until 6pm today. NO OUTDOOR BURNING! Southwest winds will be 20-30mph with gusts up to 45 mph. With relative humidity as low as 25%, any fire that develops will catch a spread quickly.
