Last week on Wonkhe: After treading through the darkness of R&D consultations James Coe finds a light over in Australia

My Sunday is sorted. This is a great book, very enjoyable read. Buettner, B. (2022) The mineral and the visual: Precious stones in Medieval secular culture. Pennsylvania: The Pennsylvania State University Press. #MedievalSky

‘We teach each other how to live’ - Anne Michaels. ‘Each language [is] a powerful transporting river bearing its own rich history, its own literature, its kitchens and songs.’ A little corner of multilingual reflection on the university campus in Toronto. 🍁🇨🇦

In a world of diverse cultures and languages you cannot do global humanities with integrity in English only. As the chair of @englishassociation.bsky.social l stand with colleagues in Modern Languages @cardiffuniversity.bsky.social and across the UK.

My PhD was supervised 50/50 between politics and modern languages at Cardiff and it made the whole experience so much richer. The proposal to close MLANG is incredibly short-sighted and detrimental to all at CU. The importance of languages and understanding global cultures can't be overstated!

Please help support our colleagues in languages at Cardiff by challenging the decision to exclude them from the category of ‘global humanities’ @ucflangs.bsky.social @artsandhums.bsky.social www.timeshighereducation.com/opinion/card...

So many incredible encounters today! Prof David Olusoga gave the inaugural National Humanities Lecture at the School of Advanced Study @SASNews on the value of the Humanities and the role of the public scholar. And I also met rock star of Languages advocacy, Michael Worton!

This is an important letter from bodies representing Arts and Humanities in the UK. Please share widely

Putting the situation at Cardiff into context. 💪 CUCD is proud to be an affiliate member of the @artsandhums.bsky.social 👇Please read and share their open letter concerning the devastating cuts across the Humanities sector …

@artsandhums.bsky.social is doing essential work defending the work of arts and humanities disciplines in these dangerous times. This letter is requesting an urgent review of arts and humanities provision across the UK. I strongly second that.

The Arts and Humanities Alliance have written an open letter to Bridget Philippson, Secretary of State for Education, on the recently announced cuts across the sector. We are concerned that these measures disproportionately affect our disciplines and call for an urgent government review.

Insightful article by @ednewtonrex.bsky.social . There's simply no need for the govmt to sell out UK creative industries: "Lots of AI – the type the government cares about, such as in healthcare, science and defence – is not trained on the work of the world’s creators." 1/2
