Free speech mouvement ?

Letter signed by members of the Columbia History Department urging resistance to the Trump Administration's efforts to dictate university policy. "Should this control be realized, here or elsewhere, it would make any real historical scholarship, teaching, and intellectual community impossible."

Oh shit

If you are visiting the United States, having a negative view of Trump is enough to get you denied entry. If this was coming out of Russia or China, we would deplore such an authoritarian attack on freedom of expression.

"Freedom of Speech"

In France we were more than 15 000 people in the streets for #standupforscience2025 #justsaying

Academics: Maybe we can collectively roust the higher ed powers that be to stand up. I have signed. If tenure is not for this, what is it for?

Everyone: Trump destroying the university sector is a massive opportunity for the UK to drive growth in high value sectors and pull in some amazing researchers! The Treasury:

Chilling report from Brown University. Administration advises all foreign students, staff, and faculty to postpone or reconsider (ie cancel) international travel, due to federal government's crackdown on universities. Brown also warns against *domestic travel* -since it's unclear what ICE will do.

A colleague told me at a recent AAUP national training meeting over Zoom, almost 900 people were participating.

Today as I navigate the 🔥🔥🔥🔥 in higher ed, I am thinking about this. Attacking higher ed is attacking a place where women - across all racial categories - have been more successful (in one key way - graduating from college ) than men in the last 20+ years.

Would anyone with access to "Coastal Metropolis: Environmental Histories of Modern New York City" on Jstor kindly send me chapter 10 by David Stradling? 🙏https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctv1hqdk4m

We join with @historians.org, @oah.org & others to denounce US goverment's efforts to censor historical content in public resources. These mandates are deeply antithetical to our community's work of stewarding & preserving the integrity of the scholarly record. Read more: https://bit.ly/4hxQHlu

I'd be interested (in dm if prefered) to have US colleagues reactions to such propositions from foreign institutions and discuss about them, their options, and expectations #standupforscience #insolidarity

We often use the word “Orwellian” too quickly but what our U.S. colleagues are describing in their historic joint statement is indeed terrifying #censorship #Trump (Thx @emmanuelleperez.bsky.social for sharing…) www.historians.org/news/aha-oah...

Are you working in a setting where historical data is at risk of being lost/erased/removed? Let the OAH know. I think this is an important way to account for what's there now so that we understand what goes missing. You can fill out the form anonymously. #historysky www.oah.org/2025/03/12/r...

ok, that's a start !!!

YET MORE BREAKING NEWS TODAY Federal judge in California orders the rehiring of thousands of fired probationary federal employees in suit brought by union @ashleymurray.bsky.social @statesnewsroom.com DC www.newsfromthestates.com/article/judg...

104 years ago the Republican Vice President of the United States wrote a newspaper essay villifying the "The Enemies of the Republic," by whom he meant college professors and public school teachers.

The cover-up… USAID officials were ordered to destroy classified documents, raising concerns about compliance with federal law. An internal email sent to remaining bureau leaders at the agency’s Washington headquarters provided guidance on “clearing our classified safes and personnel documents.”

one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

Per a source, EPA staff now have to get approval directly from DOGE regarding any changes to existing funding agreements/grants, even those awarded years ago and just doing things like no-cost time extensions, to make sure they adhere to executive orders.

New, from me: Trump and Musk are engaged in a broad-based downsizing of government, using that downsizing to selectively target their enemies, while expanding their political power by trading exceptions to the downsizing. It's a new spoils systems. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/trump-and-...

The adverb "anticonstitutionnellement" is famously the longest word in French ;)

This is really, really bad. Columbia made the mistake of thinking that placating the administration would spare them. Other universities made the mistake of thinking it would stop with Columbia. It won’t stop without disciplined pushback; it’s an existential question for American universities.
