While true in the broadest sense, it’s not an empathetic response to an immediate concern. Given the circumstances, saying “I understand your concern that people might die as a result of these cuts. Let me share how we are looking at this in the Senate” would have left the constituent feeling seen

Thinking of Joe and the family as well as his supporters. Cancer sucks. While his is stage four I read that it’s still treatable? Gee, wouldn’t it be nice if the government would invest in some more science and medical research instead of cutting it to give more money to the wealthy?
