It's hard to laugh at it but a kind of bleakly funny throughline in all this is that it's being overseen by people who 1) have never had any kind of real job, 2) don't know what these particular jobs are or might entail and haven't asked, and 3) are absolutely convinced that they are fake.

it should be asked how he even had the ability to do that

A full third of federal government employees are veterans. Elon and co think fed employees are a bunch of granola eating liberals but they're sorely mistaken. Rendering hundreds of thousands of veterans unemployed with cuts to their VA healthcare and no job prospects is a recipe for an insurgency.

Jeffries: hey the GOP controls the government, absolutely nothing i can do, gonna work on my personal book tour Sanders: brb i am going to personally barnstorm strategic GOP house districts and try to peel off 2 votes so we can block Trump's cuts to Medicaid www.commondreams.org/news/bernie-...

Never in my most pessimistic moments did I expect the response to modern biotechnology saving countless lives in a pandemic to be a powerful elite captured by a conspiracy theory and dismantling our defenses against the next one out of some misguided notion of revenge

Exactly why I've been writing, podcasting, and damn near screaming about using the right language. The mainstream media is failing us SO badly right now. Stop. Calling. This. Shit. DEI. This is (re)segregation. This is racial purging. Cleansing Black people from positions of power.

Again: tech journalism is meeting this moment in a way the mainstream establishment newspapers and cable channels just aren’t. I can’t emphasize enough what a big deal this is.

Gov. Mills showed precisely the sort of integrity in the face of political pressure that the majority of the party currently lacks. More importantly, she did so extemporaneously and without hesitation from a purple state where this isn't a universally popular position. www.maine.gov/governor/mil...

they voted for harris, because rural voters are not a bigoted monolith despite what you've been led to believe. but even if they didn't? they'd still deserve fucking mail service

This piece nicely captures the sometimes subtle benefits of legal mobilization in practice—leveraging concessions, building a public record, winning by losing, etc

This was the moment, just over a month ago, when the ADL could've put an end to Republicans doing Nazi salutes. They didn't. They chose instead to provide cover by calling it "an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm." Now the sieg heil salute has been normalized. The ADL literally had ONE JOB.

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

Judges need to stop acting like these are good faith actors engaged in normal personnel practices. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/military-p...

It’s not like we were short on evidence for this, but the Supreme Court’s silence in response to Trump’s announcement that he’s just going to ignore a 5-year-old ruling really shows how worthless the Court is as an institution for “doing justice” ballsandstrikes.org/scotus/trump...

The GOP go-to is "blame immigrants" -- and it's not working this time

If you look at all the firings across the government over the last two weeks it's frequently been taken as a given that any black or woman official or officer is either a DEI hire or supports DEI and is summarily fired on that basis. Seems like the same model here.

Side note. There are eight members of the joint chiefs. the chair is black. the CNO (navy) is a woman. the other six are white guys. chair and the cno got fired tonight.

Replacing the military brass and attorneys with three-star generals you pluck from retirement is exactly what a dictator looking to use an army to do some violence does.

Spoiler: The glue is failing in freezing weather. Because they used glue on the Cybertruck.

Teachers teach. We need a leaderful movement, and there are leaders all around us.

There’s not a word in this story about the corrupt nature of this dismissal. Not a concern voiced, not a question raised, not even an acknowledgment that he’s the president’s biggest donor and he’s acting as an unelected, unconfirmed tyro wielding unchecked power over spending and the civil service.

In addition to Congress being the place that makes the laws, pretty key thing, the constitution explicitly says Congress gets to create the postal system. It’s not left implied that that comes under law making generally. The President has no power to unilaterally abolish it and move it to commerce.

trump wants to be able to tell the USPS not to deliver ballots to blue states www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

I am so sick of this shit. It’s a Sieg Heil. It’s a Nazi salute. Anyone who sees it knows. It’s ridiculous that legal departments presumably won’t let media call it what it is. Bannon made “a provocative gesture that resembled the salute Elon Musk gave at a post-inauguration rally”? Fuck off.

Just as we warned, Brendan Carr is establishing himself as America's top censor, and he's not being shy about it. And a hearty "fuck you" to anyone who insisted Carr was a "free speech warrior."

Laid-off IRS employee said he had voted for Trump: "I thought that someone with his business acumen would have come in with a fine-tooth comb and actually found it instead of coming in with a wrecking ball and destroying people’s lives for no reason." www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/p...

love that we spent four years being told what Joe Biden couldn't do

This is the most concise analysis of the strategy to dismantle the US that I have read.

hey @mattyglesias.bsky.social, the piece that you link to here — my piece — does not say that “all DEI critics want to reimpose segregation” and i would appreciate it if you didn’t lie to your audience about what my work says.

This is not about efficiency. Giving federal employees purchase cards saves money - it reduces layers of paperwork and red tape. Imagine running a business where you stopped employees from purchasing anything. The goal is to shut down government by other means.

This is trivial in the scheme of things, but just shows how little time Elon Musk spends actually reading the claims from which he draws sweeping conclusions. An anonymous X influencer posted an unsourced claim about Sen. Cornyn--and Musk shared it as proof that "legacy media lies relentlessly."

He’s not making up: news.bloomberglaw.com/banking-law/... Is this really what y’all voted for? 🫤 💰

Centrists: Leftist language policing has gone TOO FAR!!!!!!!! Actual literal in-power Republican government: we have scrubbed the word "transgender" from every website 😊😊

Wrote about the morally vacuous, strategically unsound (and also wrong!) anti-“woke”diagnosis everyone’s still sticking with, even in the midst of civil rights apocalypse.

Here's Trump's Secretary of Energy saying that climate policy has delivered tremendous "costs." Yeah, this is a lie. Exposing the false but *dominant* economics of this climate propaganda in Chapter 2 of my book, I show you how to combat this lie & what to say instead. Link in next tweet...

This ridiculous passage from the New York Times today exemplifies why the Lib establishment is unprepared to meet the moment. Hochul *has* the legal authority to fire Adams, but shouldn’t because it would “muddy the waters”?? So when your opponent does something illegal, you unilaterally disarm???

Go ahead. Let the people see you for what you are.

This is why you fight these cowards. The moment you stand up to them, they crumble. Homan has nothing. The Fourth Amendment is clear and I am well within my duties to educate people of their rights. He can threaten me with jail and call names all he wants. He’s got nothing else.

How was this contract awarded??!

the rage I felt reading this as the parent of a disabled 14yo

the twitter approach to downsizing is going great I see

remember Medicare for All? Wish that was still a thing

We got a Costco membership for the first time in our lives today. They asked why & I said because treat your workers well, you value diversity, & you didn’t cave in to authoritarian demands. He said: “We’ve been getting lots of folks saying that, thanks for joining.” Who needs a gallon of ketchup?
