Dem leaders saying they have no power is a signal to the rest of the country to capitulate in advance. It’s kneeling at the feet of tyrants. If Dems dared to imagine, much less say, “We do have power”, millions might remember that they have power, too. Instead, we have needless defeatism.

A lot of people who’ve posted that “I don’t know how to explain that you should care about other people” quote need to know that they should care about other people. I want my tax dollars to go to paying for insulin for the most vile MAGA asshole you ever heard of; that’s part of “everyone”.

I hear the D&D people "fixed" the carrion crawler in the latest errata. So this is the perfect time for a thread that's going to explain: 1: That there was really nothing to fix; because 2: The only real problem was the spectacular number of rules lawyers who don't know how to read law.

Andrew Lang described the way economists use statistics as the way “a drunk uses a lamppost—for support rather than illumination.” I keep coming back to that line when reading the transparently cynical academic efforts to provide support (and not illumination) for Trump’s birthright citizenship EO.

The one very narrow sense in which the Trump era has made me more conservative is that I’ve become much more conscious of the ease & speed with which flawed but absolutely vital norms & institutions can be blown up beyond the point of easy repair.

I work at a cancer center doing the paperwork to keep our clinical trials running with the FDA and IRBs so patients can get access to trials for treatments and symptom management. I work with NCI databases, records, staff, and funding every day. This is gutting.

Set up an entire shadow government! Other countries do already do this! Let people see how putting you in charge would be different!

go full shadow cabinet

They really do just satirize themselves now. (This one’s from Disney.)

This kind of thing puts the lie to meritocracy. People facing the kinds of challenges Rose Ferreira faced can only achieve what she did by being absolutely exceptional, and they want to erase her.

just over here photoshopping muppets onto the cover of elle magazine: thread

I am almost forty and right now I am pretty active as an organizer. But I was not born into this work. I am naturally shy, impatient, and an introvert. I would say I spent most of the last twenty years spinning my wheels. Wanting to do community work. Not knowing how.

This supposedly complimentary story about one of Musk's greasy goons embodies one of the core problems of DOGE: they were so incompetent they didn't do basic version control or backups, and so lost all their work. Such people are unfit to be anywhere near critical government infrastructure.

Popular or not Dems cannot bend on the need for trans people to be treated with basic humanity and respect. If we give up that because the right made trans people unpopular, we give up everything. They’ll dice us group by group like a salami. We die on this hill or we die alone in a ditch

I'm getting a lot of freaked out late-night texts from my friends who are not experienced organizers, looking for advice on how to deal with the constant onslaught of bad news and how to make themselves useful. This is the advice I give.

patriotism can be aspirational. the united states is great not for what it is but what it tries to be. it really is a special country in a lot of good ways that are not immediately apparent until you live somewhere else.
