#OnThisDay 1900: 129 trade unionists and socialists met in London to establish "a distinct Labour group in Parliament" that would promote legislation in "the direct interests of labour." The Labour Representation Committee, renamed the Labour Party in 1906, was born.

The Clarion Cycling Club, named after the popular socialist ‘Clarion’ newspaper, was established in Birmingham #OnThisDay 1894. Members used their cycling trips to circulate socialist literature and support socialist election candidates.

The Cato Street Conspiracy, an attempt to murder Prime Minister Lord Liverpool and his cabinet, was foiled in a violent confrontation #OnThisDay 1820. The plotters were found guilty of high treason. 5 were hanged and beheaded, while 5 others were transported to Australia.

#OnThisDay 1678: First publication of John Bunyan’s ‘The Pilgrim's Progress’, one of the most significant works of religious English literature. Bunyan was a Puritan preacher who spent 12 years in jail for holding unlawful meetings outside the auspices of the Church of England.

Julia Scurr, suffragette and Labour councillor, was born in London #OnThisDay 1871. In 1919 Scurr was elected to Poplar Borough Council, playing a leading role in the Poplar Rates Rebellion of 1921 and serving as Mayor of Poplar in 1923-4.

#OnThisDay 1922: Shapurji Saklatvala, a member of the Communist Party who received the official endorsement of the Labour Party, became the third Indian elected to Parliament. Saklatvala served as MP for Battersea North between 1922-23 and 1924-29.
