I am begging people (incl. historians) to think more *historically* about this. We’ve already done “But how accurate is this film/TV show/video game, really?” so many times & we keep repeating the same basic questions and getting nowhere. AI is just the new shiny thing www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Anyone looking for (bleak) insight into what it’s been like at Cardiff University over the last few weeks, read this:

Two Weeks In The Death Spiral Of Cardiff University, by an anonymous academic. This is truly shocking read. The Cardiff executive board should hang their heads in shame. voice.cymru/two-weeks-in...

Just gonna share this piece I wrote about the metaverse two years ago for Dezeen… www.dezeen.com/2023/01/19/m...

Medievalism/games your thing? Do we have the event for you!

The new school into which the remaining Humanities departments are to be merged is going to be the School of Global Humanities. Meanwhile, global languages will no longer be taught there.

Cardiff UCU on the brutal & unnecessary cuts at Cardiff Uni announced yesterday: “Is this the kind of outward-facing, forward-looking Wales we want to be a part of? “This is an act of gross economic & cultural vandalism as well as being terrible for staff.” @ucu.org.uk youtu.be/PF3okajNhmc?...

[reposted] The storm has broken at Cardiff University. Solidarity to everyone who is going to be affected by leaving the university, or by remaining as part of a substantially weakened workforce. Please join a union.

The humanities are gutted in Cardiff. These cuts are brutal & will do irreparable harm to education in Wales and UK The goal is to eliminate half or more of all Humanities academic posts across various schools and smush them together into one school On a side note, I might need a new affiliation

I wrote about my book 'The Middle Ages in Computer Games' for the Proofed blog from @boydellandbrewer.bsky.social and they turned it into one of my favourite ads ever. buff.ly/4fZMqHR

Beneath all their rebellious posturing, Rockstar is weirdly Victorian, and we should talk about it. I'll go first: readdead.com/2024/12/04/i...

To all of you who has supported @rasheedabueideh.bsky.social's Dreams of a Pillow already: thank you so so so much for being a part of this ever-improbable dream of a Palestinian developer making a Palestinian game about Palestinian stories. Read up, signal boost, support at launchgood.com/1948

Part II of my examination of gender, misogyny, & homophobia in RDR2: a sprawling yet tiny game that's barely aware of most of the population, the writers' insults to women in the arts & sciences, their failures to grasp women's interiority, and much more. readdead.com/2024/11/27/i...

Historical Games Network discussion panel coming up a fortnight today! Read more here, and register to attend and hear from a brilliant lineup of speakers 👇 #gtp #gamingthepast

An attempt to untangle the knot of loathing and longing at the center of RDR2. Part I of my look at the game's treatment of gender: masculinity and homophobia. Plus, some bonkers unhinged dialog. readdead.com/2024/11/20/i...

My most recent book, on Red Dead, coedited with the brilliant Esther Wright!

This is shocking and shit, and it’s one of the biggest problems historical games studies faces. Too many conservative academics with little substantive knowledge or experience about what games are or could be, in positions of power to stop any kind of field development with their terrible opinions

So given that it looks like most of the academics & historians are heading over this way, I wanted to do a thread here about something that I think should be of serious concern to both historians in general and those who work in the field of 'historical games studies'. 🗃️ 1/
