This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

As with so many other places, Corporate America has forgotten why you aren't supposed to eat the seed corn

@megelison.bsky.social sometimes sends me a concerning, oh-how-have-I-fucked-up-this-time text - “I really need to ask you something” - and when I reply she just asks “Do you love this shit? Are you high right now?”

Once every year or two, I will call @sylvie-althoff.bsky.social out of the blue, sing the chorus to Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend” loud and off-key, and then hang up before she can say anything in reply.

again: "ICE operates by Vampire Rules" is an objectively true and also funny statement

Well this is an unpleasant beginning to my days of rest

hey, look at this. read it, reskeet this, like this, and do it as well. it's about trans people and passports. take it seriously. thank you!

in the trump administration, “merit” is pronounced “white” like how strom thrumond said it.

This is so many words to say Trump fired the chairman of the joint chiefs because he’s black www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/u...

Of the Chiefs of Staff, vice chiefs of staff, and judge advocates general of the three branches, Trump fired all the women and Black people.

This is literally extortion

Return to tradition. 💜 Dreaming of the Trancestors is once again available for pre-order, from now to the end of February. With trans identity under attack today, I hope you can find comfort and courage within its pages. We have always been here, and we always will be. www.hearthkvlt.com

I'm gonna keep reposting examples of people not taking shit because it's important for us to see that you can, simply, reject the shit. Say "Uh... no no no, we will not be tolerating that."

...yeah, but, c'mon, JB. If you weren't speaking up a *little* bit in service your ambitions, you would have cut that sentence from this slide.

So if you criticize Elon Musk, Trump’s DOJ will send you this letter. Members of Congress must have the right to forcefully oppose the Trump Administration. I will not be silenced.

The facts of the transgender discrimination cases that the Trump EEOC wants to drop are stomach-turning. They are doing this because they want to empower the abuse of trans people, which they don't think should ever have been illegal in the first place ballsandstrikes.org/scotus/trump...

Did I tell you guys about my new Star Wars themed bubble tea and party venue? It’s called Boba Fête

In the sense that half a dozen billionaires are also Americans, I'm sure that is in fact the plan.

It should be more embarrassing for the Supreme Court that Trump has announced he's just going to ignore Bostock, a case the Court decided *less than five years ago*, and the justices cannot bring themselves to say a single thing about it ballsandstrikes.org/scotus/trump...

"This is the bitterest pain among men, to have much knowledge but no power."

So I did this today: banged out a couple hundred words of a pitch while managing lab, sent it to the opinion page editor at the newspaper my parents still somehow get in print, and got back a "yes" in, I absolutely kid you not, under 15 minutes

Also, who walks into Starbucks and thinks, "man, this place isn't nearly white enough?"

Of course the new issue of The Power Fantasy comes out on a snow day.

Washington Post is reporting that the US Gov't program to send free COVID tests to households will be shut down tonight, and the remaining tests destroyed. If you haven't already ordered yours in the latest batch (autumn 2024's) it's super quick & easy, price $0.00 covidtests.gov

"A lot of fat in the government?" Much of that "fat" is your union siblings, you shortsighted motherfucker. Not to mention the people that keep your jet in the air.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker in his State of the State speech (the "as prepared" remarks), drawing a direct line from history:

We give you: the state’s rights party

Whereas the wink for a bondage fetishist is that the violence, the control, isn’t real, here the wink is that it is. The facelessness, the wordlessness of it, combined with “The White House,” gives you no choice but to imagine the fascist’s pleasure. This was made to invade our minds.

It’s kind of remarkable how bad people are at reading the plain text of a film that puts these ideas in character’s mouths only to explicitly knock them down

Major news! A court in Montana has just declared SB458, a bill that "defines sex" in a way that ends the legal recognition of transgender people in Montana, as facially unconstitutional. This is the first time a bill defining sex has been ruled on! Huge win for trans people in MT!

Probationaries who have been illegally fired: this article contains information about which law firm to contact in order to join the class action suit. www.govexec.com/workforce/20...

This is the major thing I would like to see any smug blog people admit. They ALL agreed that it would be too dangerous to pursue Trump as if he were a real threat to democracy because of fear of a backlash. They ALL said we should just trust our institutions. They were tragically, tragically wrong

we’re gonna be doing this a lot

Dan McQuade and David Roth talk to Chris Person about the work of digitizing film and TV that's otherwise on the verge of disappearing.

There is no point in Senate confirmation hearings, at least for GOP candidates. Supreme Court justices and cabinet appointees baldly lie to the public and still get confirmed, and the senators who confirmed them don't even have the decency to get indignant about it.

The people making these cuts are not smart! They think every institution is a start-up trying to make you order cheese fries more often. Federal agencies are by and large working on real problems that will have real consequences if they are dropped!

if there is a third wave of civic tech, let it be 87% union density among computer programmers
