One President wildly exceeded his authority by forgiving some student loans; a different President barely scratched the surface of his authority by disappearing anyone he pleases without trial to a foreign gulag. Constitutional law is a serious intellectual enterprise.

At 5pm, about 11 minutes before the govt filed its new contemptuous response in Abrego Garcia—asserting only that he was being held at CECOT under El Salvador’s “sovereign, domestic” authority—his attys asked Judge Xinis to order discovery & start contempt proceedings. Proposed order: 1/3

This Passover I’m thinking hard about the holiday’s history of resistance to tyrannical leaders, and the imperative for Jewish people to stand with all oppressed peoples of the world.

Trump: I am the strongest, most powerful person ever! The whole world lines up to kiss my ass! Courts: Return Kilmer Abrego Garcia from the El Salvador torture prison you sent him to Trump: Sorry. No can do. Totally out of my hands

More Trump capitulation. And a big one. Computers, smartphones and chip making equipment. Released at slowest news period possible.

Well, that settles the question as to whether he has the power to bring Garcia back..

A stunning catalogue of bad faith by gov’t lawyers, whollly undermining the “presumption of regularity.” And it’s still less than three months in. 👇👇👇 www.lawfaremedia.org/article/what...

Excellent piece from @walterolson.bsky.social who notes this as a new level of revenge orders, and that the spirit is pure Beria: “show me the man, and I will show you the crime” More Russification* of American politics. Так стыдно. *Beria was Georgian, and it’s not exact translation but it holds

BigLaw has collapsed. All hail the rise of SmallLaw. And, of course, MediumSizedLaw. Which is in desperate search of a good name.

Garcia v. Norm: Judge: "There are no business hours in this court."

Judicial proceedings regarding Abrego Garcia. Judge has the lawyer in her teeth, like a dog shredding a plush toy...

Trump begs China to call him. China laughs.

After our story on Deployed Resources was finished -- in a major development -- ICE posted an up to $3.8 billion to the company to operate a migrant detention camp on Fort Bliss. The first move in plans to detain thousands of migrants on military bases www.propublica.org/article/trum...

Helluva headline. Trump doesn't want to call China. He wants China to call him. So that the can claim they came begging:

The least surprising legal story you will ever see:

Reuters wants you to know that Trump must face a defamation suit from the Central Park Five, according to a federal judge. But Reuters seems also incapable of linking to the actual decision. Which can be found here: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

“Sorry, folks. Autism doesn't make you a fascist.”

Great. Tariffs being treated like a wildfire.

A small example on why you shouldn't instantly trust statements from certain governmental authorities:

How very Soviet.

That Trump capitulated on tariffs and has seemingly reversed course does not mean boom times are ahead. To the contrary… 👇👇👇

Trump tariff policy explained: When he wanted to build a 40-story building on a site zoned for 30 stories, he would apply for a 70-story permit. That “settle” for 40. That’s what he’s doing with tariffs. But not factoring in the downside effects on trade as people seek more reliable partners.

Odd to see a POTUS concede to deliberately manipulating markets. (I’m bring charitable by saying “odd.”)

Just send the interns. White House press corps doesn’t mean what it used to.

President Trump's nominee to head NASA, Jared Isaacman, really really really really really did not want to admit that Elon Musk was in his meeting with Trump, when Isaacman was offered the NASA post. This ranks up there as some of the worst testimony that I have ever seen on Capitol Hill.

I remain shocked about two things: 1. That the richest and most powerful country the world has ever seen is whining that other countries aren’t being fair to us. 2. That there are people who accept that.

“Even if cult members and co-conspirators don’t care, rational Americans should. Including those in the news media. Journalists must put it all together and loudly declare the alarming reality: The president is mentally unfit”

No, Trump isn't cratering our economy. The entire Republican Party is cratering our economy. The enablers deserve just as much blame as Trump.

Today would be an excellent day for several GOP congressman to declare themselves independent and caucus with the Democrats.

Trump used an emergency powers law to impose tariffs — but that law contains no reference to tariffs and no president has ever used it for this purpose.
