I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F. 18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it. We made this website to tell our story: 18f.org

Thanks for the love today @nunomaduro.com .. I thought Restream was broken when I saw how many people were watching us live, turns out it was you and your crew.

Last year, I began wearing hearing aids, and they've become essential and improved my life. Apple released AirPods Pro, which can function as hearing aids. This video from Adam Savage reflects my experience. If you use or may need hearing aids, it's worth a watch. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uykq...

"Success is being ready for luck" -- Dr F (@drguthals on X) This has become a new mental bookmark in my head. Something to always keep in mind, especially when meeting new people.

It's that time of the week again. Join @ericvanjohnson.bsky.social and @johncongdon.bsky.social for this week's insights on the PHP Architect Podcast. Livestream is starting now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANAIkixW0Do

We locked in our second keynote speaker for PHP Tek this year, and I couldn't be happier. Not to mention that @tessak22.bsky.social is a PHP Tek Alumn. We have a really strong lineup this year. A lot of great talks. https://x.com/tessak22/status/1882901431549845915

Our PHP Podcast is now live streaming over on the PHP Architect YouTube channel -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCnTQ6oR-Ww

My dog Toast has made friends with a horse named Olly

Last night we announced the speaker lineup for PHPTek 2205 (phptek.io/speakers) which includes a father/son combo talk with Peter Meth and Easton Meth, and if they don't do their talk dressed in hazmat suits ala Breaking Bad, I'm stepping down from my role as the sex symbol for the PHP language.

Stupid Southern California Fires livestream us to cancel the PHP Podcast livestream today. John and I are fine, but I lost power and internet about 15 minutes before the show. Thanks to solar and batteries, I still have power but still no internet.

If you say to me today, "I think Laravel is becoming mainstream now because ... ", I already don't care what your "because" is. Laravel have been mainstream for years. Welcome to the ride, please keep your arms and hands in at all time and enjoy.

My New Year resolution is to be more positive and complain less this year. I hate New Year's resolutions. Damn it.

Kick off the New Year with a fresh dose of PHP insights! Our first live php[podcast] of 2025 starts in 10 minutes. Tune in now and get ahead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwqEI4M7D3g

I am a little late on this one but this would be the final contribution to my family chat series over the past few days.

Day 3 of Family Chat

Johnson Family Chat Follies Day #2

My wife got me a pair of Oculus for Christmas, so I will be busy for the foreseeable future.

Over the years, my wife has posted some of our internal family chats. I was scrolling through her time recently and couldn't stop laughing, so I thought I would share them with you over the next few days. Here is one of my favorites.

To my friends out there who enjoy Star Trek, is Lower Decks worth my time. It looks like it might be fun to watch. Just need something new to binge watch, ideally something not too serious or heavy and this seems to fit the bill.

One last bitch session before the end of the year. If your company doesn't have a representative to transfer me to because it "after business hours" then your stupid bot shouldn't be calling me.

And now, the real fun starts. We start to plan our talks, work with speakers, book some flights, and post a schedule. Keep an eye on https://phptek.io for all the latest. And don't forget, the clock is ticking on the Blind Early Bird pricing.

In the Nov release of @phparch.com I stepped out of my comfort zone and wrote about something I've enjoyed working with, @couchdb.bsky.social. I also made it a free download for anyone interested to check it out. https://www.phparch.com/article/2024-11-php-couchdb-and-chill/

It's still 2024 but we've already started the process of selecting talks for @phptek 2025. Round one of many rounds to come.

It is the small "quality of life" things like the new #LaravelLivewire `wire:current` that make me really appreciate the contributors behind the code. Simple little features that heals years of small paper cuts and coding up solutions myself. Great work @calebporzio.bsky.social

Recently, on the @phparch.bsky.social podcast, we talked about PIE, and I am getting oddly excited that a composer-like workflow is being applied to extensions and the idea of searching for extensions on Packagist. https://thephp.foundation/blog/2024/11/19/pie-pre-release/

Meant to mention this earlier but NeoVimConf is off and running for any of my NeoVim peeps out there. Stream is free. https://neovimconf.live/ The stream is ThePrimeagen's Twitch Channel https://www.twitch.tv/theprimeagen

I just discovered the terminal file manager I've been looking for my entire life. Yazi (https://github.com/sxyazi/yazi). I've tried them all, Ranger. Midnight Commander, Nnn but none of them felt right until Yazi. Now I have one less reason to leave my terminal

Just published the update Prism docs! prism.echolabs.dev

Well, that's it, @PHPUgly has been put to bed. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank all the listeners who over the years have let me know how much they enjoy listening. It was clear we were bringing too much joy to the PHP Community, and we needed to put an end to it πŸ˜„

I was just telling Grumpy how he ruined me with this Home Row Mods because now I HATE not having it. I don't have it on my laptop keyboard, for example, so when I travel, it's not there. For anyone just unclear what Home Row Mods is, here is a video on it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLWQ4Gx88h4

Wrapping up my first trip to Portland was fun. I enjoyed @CascadiaPHP and seeing old friends and making some new ones, but I am also looking forward to getting back to SoCal and the family. I hope to see everyone in May at @phptek, and don't forget to submit your talk proposals.

A great place to go if you're a Laravel, or even a PHP, developer and looking for some good handles to follow here.

Bluesky now has over 10 million users, and I was #2,578,605!

I'm kind of excited about tonight's 400th episode of @phpugly. If you're kicking around later this afternoon, come and hang out with us and talk PHP and web development. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP5bZw2Kw8E

I am looking for a talented Capacitor and/or Cordova plugin developer to create a camera plugin for a project. It’s straightforward and has clear requirements already laid out by our developer. DMs are open if you or someone you know is interested. #Ionicframework #Capacitor
