I will argue that the closest Branford Marsalis got to Jan Garbarek was his version of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" from the 1988 album Random Abstract.

I *so* much love this album!

On my way home from work today I dropped by a bookstore and got a copy of Stephen Graham Jones’s The Buffalo Hunter Hunter (2025). Hopefully I will be able to begin reading this weekend. www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Bu...

Today it is 30 years since the release of Faith No More's album King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime.

Yesterday I got the proofs for my article "Spirituality and Beyoncé’s Lemonade" forthcoming in the collection The Signs of the Times: The Intersection between Popular Culture and Political Theology. Planned publication June 11.

I’m checking out Branford Marsalis’s reimagining of Keith Jarrett’s album Belonging (1974). Jarrett’s original is close-to-holy for many Norwegians of my generation, and, yes, I admit I am kind of skeptical to Mr. Marsalis’s versioning. But hey, I’m going to give it a chance.

According to the White House and the current US Administration it is now an example of "divisive narratives that distort our shared history" that "race is not a biological reality but a social construct." This is not going well.

Kalaallit erfalasuat.

"While the president is banning DEI, firing key government personnel, and trying to erase the legacy of important figures like Jackie Robinson, many Black Americans are warning folks not to take hit the streets to protest in response. And the reason why? Because that’s exactly what Trump wants."

We should all strive for the impossible task of being able to write about Cecil Taylor.

Here is a compilation of Traditional Greenlandic Music – recordings from between 1905 and 1984. I don’t know enough about Greenlandic music, but I am working on it and trying to learn more. The US should just keep away and let the Greenlanders decide their own future and business partners.

I happen to think that mockery should be a primary strategy against the current US government. It is also pretty easy to figure out.

I kind of like the Signal app. It is for encrypted messages, not that I have much to hide. Some competing apps (say, WhatsApp) is owned by more dubious companies (i.e., Meta), so that’s a major reason. Of course, the encryption is not really working if you include a journalist in the group text!

"A Change Is Gonna Come"

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Jonathan Sterne, an extraordinary scholar whose groundbreaking work transformed the fields of sound studies, media theory, and the cultural study of technology.

You should all listen to Lonnie Holley's new album Tonky (released March 21). It is quite marvelous, as Mr. Holley's albums tend to be.

Who knew that "gulag" in American is 'El Salvador'?

"Denmark said this week it had begun advising transgender travellers to contact the US embassy in Copenhagen before departure to ensure there would be no issues with travel documents."

Composer Olga Neuwirth criticizes the unequal treatment of female composers in Austria. She explicitly blames the State Opera in Vienna and its director for the „bashing of elderly women.“ backstageclassical.com/neuwirt-krit...

Today, @theatlantic.com published a search tool that allows authors to check if their works are in LibGen, an illegal pirate site AI companies copied for their AI systems. Here's what you can do: authorsguild.org/news/meta-li...

"We Don't Need No Education"

You should read this!

Yes, my book is on the LibGen list.

Yes, a few texts by me are also in this base - including my book Afrofuturism and Black Sound Studies.

Teaching again in approximately 9 hours. Good night.

"Under his eye."

"France’s research minister said a French scientist was denied entry to the US this month after immigration officers at an airport searched his phone and found messages in which he had expressed criticism of the Trump administration."

"De même source, des messages évoquant le traitement des scientifiques par l’administration Trump auraient été trouvés. Il lui aurait été reproché des messages « qui traduisent une haine envers Trump et peuvent être qualifiés de terrorisme ». "

Le Monde reporting that a French scientist traveling to Houston to attend a conference was denied entry to US after a search of his phone & computer revealed messages critical of Trump's science cuts, "which [says CPB] conveyed hatred of Trump & could be qualified as terrorism". Computer confiscated

Today it is 63 years since the release of Bob Dylan's debut album.

"After a recent change by the Trump administration, the federal government no longer explicitly prohibits contractors from having segregated restaurants, waiting rooms and drinking fountains."

It is Bill Frisell's birthday - he turns 74 - and I am listening to Nashville (1997). I *love* this album.

Aurelio Martínez, 1969-2025. R.I.P. Here is his 2014 album Landini.

This is scary stuff.

The so-called "tough on China" policy...

Today Courtney Pine is 61. Happy birthday. Here is Jazz Warriors's 1987 album Out Of Many, One People.
