#TheMoreTheMerrier! Wu, Yan &co show @cp-immunity.bsky.social that antiviral OAS alerts neighboring cells by producing 2-5A which via gap junctions or exporter/importer activates RNaseL, protecting against infection or tumor growth! #ScienceSavesLives dlvr.it/TJB0nT

I started out our lab meeting today with a ~15 min summary of what the NIH does, indirects, current attacks on the NIH, and what we can do to fight. Some of my lab members follow the news, some don't, but I think they were all highly interested in learning. Happy to send these slides to anyone

In light of policies to defund biomedical research, and with judicial hearings happening today, we hope to highlight the many ways biomedical research improves people's lives, and to convey how damaging the proposed cuts would be... not just for us researchers, but for everyone.

#NoTimeToDie! Lien, @fitzgeraldkate.bsky.social &co show @pnas.org that Raver1 controls the splicing of RIPK1, impacting caspase-8 activation, gasdermin D & E cleavage, IL1 & IL18 production & pyroptic cell death in the context of Yersinia infection in vivo! #ScienceSavesLives

THIS IS HUGE! Researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center say results of a Phase I trial of an mRNA vaccine aimed at preventing pancreatic cancer show promise. The vaccine PREVENTED the cancer from coming back in patients who had already received treatment for MORE THAN three years. 🧪🧵⬇️

We're still getting this drip-drip of stories implying mounting evidence for a lab leak (despite no actual evidence). Meanwhile, the increasingly strong case for zoonosis rarely makes headlines.

@katherinejwu.com getting straight to the ❤️ of the crisis. This current attack on science must be stopped to protect all Americans.

@jeremymberg.bsky.social Have you or anyone else heard about any Admin supplements to Promote Research Continuity (“Maternity Leave Supplements”) being discontinued? A new Asst. Prof. at home with a tiny baby just had hers disappear from her ERA commons account while waiting for her NOA. Awful.

Shoutout to all of the exceptional Black scientists who have contributed to and are currently contributing to virology research! Your work is vitally important to understanding basic virology controlling viral diseases worldwide! #BlackHistoryMonth

Well the award for most cowardly, boot-lickingest academic society has squarely gone to the American Society of Microbiology, who has taken down features of various non-white scientists. Absolutely pathetic behavior. Those articles are now coming up as “under review”. Truly sickening cowardice here.

To help people understand the importance of NIH, share what you’ve used their funding for (in easily understandable terms). I’ll start: my NIH postdoc funding helped me develop and test AI tools that could identify skin cancer across diverse skin tones.
